According to the official comics, the baby ponies who have adult counterparts were actually born through a magic mirror!
Basically saying they are the Ponies reflections come to life?
The adult ponies then take care of "their babies" as if they were their own children, haha
I guess that's the version I'm going for ;)

I can't say I have ever thought about it in any great depth but thats a cute idea that they are a younger version of the adult pony. Personally though if asked I would go with them being mummies and babies...but thats a personal preference.

I've always just thought of them as the children of the adults but I can see the other way making sense.  :)

I always thought they were the babies of the adult look alikes (like Moondancer is Baby Moondancer's mother) I remember the episode Bright Lights and Lofty and Hearthrob went searching for "their babies" - Baby Lofty and Baby Hearthrob. Baby Halfnote didn't have a mother, poor thing :P

Apparently, a couple of the sets of twins should actually be called quadruplets since they all came alive on the paper they were drawn on at about the same time.

Hrm... for me it's Mom and Baby... like, not what the mom looked like... but... a mother with her foal. Lots of single moms in the Pony World, but I mean I related them more to normal horses, where the father wouldn't necessarily be around, but the bond between mother and foal was very strong... no matter what gender the baby, had a strong bond with mom... so for me, SS Lofty is BBE Lofty's mother... and Shady (even though that pose is sometimes considered a "male" pose) is BBE Shady's mother... Dunno. That's how it always was for me and my friends when we would play ponies as kids, so it's always stuck as that for me.

But thinking of them as like... Baby someone and Adult someone is a neat way to think of them too! :)

I always thought of them as mommy/baby. Though as a collector I have thought of some of these things too and wish more loving family sets were made.  Also wondered about the newborn ponies with rattles/baby bottles, etc. as symbols- when they "grow up" do they still have newborn themed symbols?  :P

I see them as mommy and baby like a lot of the cartoons and the merchandise. Mommy and baby Glory and Moondancer tend to be shown together a lot on the old merch.

Brightglow - made me think of something else when you mentioned that about the Newborns...

I never thought ponies grew up! Mommies were always mommies, babies always babies, so... that's weird huh? LOL

When I was a kid, we used to play that all the ponies were babies (using our baby ponies), then they grew up into g2's (teenagers) then into adults... then their babies were born, then grew up to teenagers (g2's) and then the foals were born... hey it worked!

I always thought of them as mother and baby.   As a kid I didn't think about why they looked so much alike.  Years later I made up a story that the baby girls are born looking like their mothers, the baby boys are born looking like their fathers, and when they are adolescents they magically morph into new colors and get their own unique symbol.

I mean, I would hate for a grown-up pony to have to go around answering to "Baby Surprise"!

Interesting sidenote, on the boxes of the first baby ponies the front would say things like . . .

I used to think of them as younger selves of the adult ponies, although the subtle differences in the symbols and colors were questionable. But then when I discovered the Twice-as-Fancy babies, that theory was tossed. How could Milky Way be a pegasus as a foal, then a unicorn as an adult? Did Up Up and Away chop her horn off when she was a troubled teen? So now I have to think of them as mommy and baby.
Personally, I dislike the babies looking like little clones of the adults, so in my herd there's a rule that I can either have the baby version of a pony, or the adult, but not both. (Helps me keep the collection manageable, too!)
I'll put something here some time

LOL. You make an excellent point. That would be awkward for the babies when grown up!

Huh. Well, I guess the box definitively answers the question of what to think of the baby Ponies as, canon-wise. But that is odd phrasing.

NoPonySpecial: You're right; I just saw the Up Up and Away baby recently and realized something isn't quite right there, unless she really is a different Pony.

Sure, they'll be forced to work as nannies, nurses or daycare takers though. No avoiding destiny XD
