American Girl
« on: March 31, 2013, 10:59:59 AM »
Hi guys! I'm Blam. :P Couldn't think of a good name when I signed up.

Anyways, this discussion is for AG (short for american girl) not me.

Soo, if you don't know that American Girl is, (although I'm sure most of you do) it's a big company owned by Mattel, and Mattel also owns Barbie. So I'm sure you've heard of them.

The dolls for American Girl are $100 each. This is because their very well made (The clothes are spendy too!).

Now I have a solution for getting out of buying their clothes, which are probably over $25 dollars for each set.

1. Go to your local Target.
2. Go to the doll stuff.
3. Find Our Generation. (That's a doll company as well. Although their dolls may not be as well made, the clothes are beautiful!)
4. Pick the outfit you want and take it home to your doll! :D

If you have a walmart, then I'm sure they'll have the same stuff - Maybe cheaper though.

Basically, you don't have to spend that $35 dollars for that outfit at AG, you can get one just as cute from OG. :)

AG sells great stuff, too - But I can't get any of it, my room's too small...Dang.

But what about YOU?

Someone posted recently about Our Generation clothes staining, so sadly it seems they're not up to par with AG clothes. :(

ALL doll clothing can stain - there are some notorious AG clothing that stains as well.  Best bet is to set all dyes in the outfits using vinegar when you receive them.  :D  Worst offenders are RED and BLACK and NAVY dyes... they just don't set well.

The trouble with Our Generation clothes (and TRU's Journey Girls, and the other knockoffs) is that they are sized for a slightly smaller doll.  Almost all the off-brand 18" dolls have waists of 12" or smaller and the older AG dolls from before 2000 are usually 13" around the middle, so you can see how the clothes would be too tight.  It all depends on the doll you're putting them on.  There are individual measurements for each limb when it was cast in the mold, each doll was stitched slightly differently...

AG clothes have a lot more seam allowance and "give" for the price, ensuring it fits on all your dolls.  Some of the newer historical outfits never had seam allowances for all the crinolines present in the older retired clothing but those are an exception.

I have collected American Girl since the 1990's.  I adore the dolls but I only buy authentic AG clothing for mine.  I have plastic containers for each doll and I put everything that goes with that doll in that container.  I have a lot of the furniture also.  I have finally slowed down with my collecting as the prices have gone so high...its hard for me to get much now.  I only buy one thing once in a while or ask for things for Christmas.  My favorite doll is Julie. I have her entire collection except her car.  Then the second favorite would be Lanie, then Kit and Addy.
I have Samantha, Kirsten, Addy, Kit, Lanie, Molly, Emily, Julie, Ruthie, 3 My AG dolls, Rebecca and I so wish wish wish I had Felicity and Julie's friend. I really like the new doll Caroline and wish I had her also.  My mother collects too. She has Kaya as we are part NAI, That doll From Hawaii, Samantha and Rebecca.  Mom loves the horses and has like 3 of those things.
I think for young children the off brand clothing s nice, but I am a purest and couldn't dress my doll in off brand. LOL  Except maybe for shoes.
