Gonna second Duck Tales. Was watching the start of it tonight, and man, it's the good stuff. I'm remembering why I liked it so much as a kid. Talespin is excellent too!

Too many favorites, I'll have to go with a list format. Sorry my list skews a little more '90s. And is also embarrassingly wordy.
Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, TaleSpin, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, etc. I didn't get to watch much Gargoyles but that's a possibility too.
Batman: the Animated Series, and the later DC cartoons are great too. Of course if the kid's more a Marvel fan I can't help much there, but I know there was an X-Men cartoon or two.
Schoolhouse Rock? More '70s but they were still showing them by the time I was watching Saturday morning cartoons so why not.
Garfield and Friends was pretty good, and I also liked The Real Ghostbusters - didn't get to see Extreme.
Digimon! I also loved Sailor Moon but that's pretty girly.
I've liked what little She-Ra I've seen, so He-Man is probably good too?
A lot of 90s/00s cartoons are pretty good too (but I'm in the age bracket to think that), Powerpuff Girls, Recess, Kids Next Door, there's a lot to choose from. I hear good things about Adventure Time, too.
And don't forget animated movies, Disney and otherwise. When I was a kid my favorite videos were the Great Mouse Detective, Rescuers Down Under (I didn't have the first one somehow)... People have good memories of Bluth stuff too, but the only ones I had were Rock-a-Doodle, which I hated, and the Secret of NIMH, which was almost my favorite movie of all time since I loved the book, but eight-year-old me will never forgive how a story about superintelligent lab animals had the ending changed to include ~magic~.
It's hard for me to find, being American, but I'm a big fan of SuperTed.

I believe that If a child grows up with both male and female Toys/Shows
they will develop a respect for both sex. Its perfectly healthy nothing wrong with a boy watching girl shows and a girl watching boy shows.
For both boys and Girls I suggest

Popples,
Care bears,
School House Rock,
Fraggle Rock,
Pound Puppies,
Pack Man,
Rubix Cube,
Flinstones kids,
A Pup named Scooby doo,
Garfield and Friends
The Adventures of Gummi Bears

But overall I would have to say that its ok to let them watch girl/Boy shows.

Someone else who watched The Pirates of Dark Water!!!

:D I was so into this show when it was on TV, it was a shame it ended so soon and never saw any real conclusion. I hadn't learned what had happened to it until more recent years when it randomly popped into my head while reminiscing over old cartoons with friends. I just remember it suddenly disappearing one day and that was that.

I keep hoping against all odds that someone will pick up the story someday. I could even see it working well as a liveaction series.

I think I had some of the toys for it too, now that I think of it. I also remember being bummed they made everyone but Tula into action figures, lol.

I can't believe I had forgotten about all these! I watched them every day at one point in time during my childhood, they were all great shows. :)

Thanks everyone, I have lots to look into now ^^. Shh, don't tell anyone I'm mostly downloading stuff online (naughty me). I just don't have much money spare for hobbys and enjoyment. There is a lot available out there, still I'm having the hardest time downloading all the original My Little Pony stuff and I don't think I will be able to buy the whole series here in Norway :(.

@NamineEveningLight. I totally agree, balance is what I'm aiming for really. I'm quite happy for him to watch both girly and boy stuff, also play with whatever toys he wants. It's not like we could avoid it anyway though, I have a baby girl who is 8 months now, and they won't ever be allowed a tv in their rooms so they will have to take turns choosing ^^.

No one has mentioned the Legend of Zelda yet? Maybe some super mario bros super show....
It's too bad that Aladdin isn't available on dvd or netflix... that would be a fun one for him to watch too.

Potato Head Kids. Adorable, you may be able to find VHS copies...
Get-along gang, shirt tails, wacky races, rocky and bullwinkle, gumby, heathcliff...

Not the TV show, but I adored the Land Before Time movies as a kid! I agree with pretty much what everyone has said. the 80's and 90's had the best TV shows!

Totally seconding The Land Before Time. At least, the first fourish or so movies... Gee, they were on nine the last I knew... Those five or so were fine, but not great IMO.

-Thundercats
-Jem
-Beetlejuice
-Garfield and Friends
-The Adventures of Gummi Bears
-The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ((Oh so adorable and it teaches children morals and values))
-Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers ((Seconded!))
-Ducktales ((Watched this one too))
-TaleSpin ((Seconded!))
-The Pirates of Dark Water
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ((Seconded; though I only watched Next Mutation and the 2003 reboot))
-X-Men ((Only saw The Animated Series and Evolution, but totally seconding!))
-Batman ((Saw The Animated Series, but seconding!))
-Tiny Toon Adventures ((I wasn't really allowed to watch TTA as it was vaguely connected to Bugs Bunny and that gang, but I snuck it in once in a while... not a fan, but it is a little distracting.)
-Animaniacs ((Not a fan, but my husband LOVES them and they're very educational))
-Rugrats ((I remember watching a little bit of this... mostly the last movie that came out, as my parents brought me along. Good stuff.))
-Rocko's Modern Life

also I like pokemon, digimon, beast wars, card captors.

Oh good, someone said Beast Wars!!! I bought all three seasons from Amazon over a year ago and I'm finally watching them now. GREAT stuff!! The plot is a little more older-child, probably more like 8 or 9, but young boys can watch it for the guns and fighting too. ^_^ Someone also said the first season of Pokemon and I'd agree with that. Totally seconding Digimon and Card Captor, though for Digimon I didn't get into it past the original seven+Kari and the season after that, the one that kept Kari and TK(American version).

What? No one has mentioned Spiderman?? I saw The Animated Series and loved it! My boss' oldest son, six or seven I think, is totally obsessed with Spiderman.

Power Rangers? C'mon... Ok, so some of it is old-school and campy... But ya gotta love 'em! Space was my favorite. Again, like some other TV shows, squeals aren't always the best... I think I stopped liking it around Ninja Storm. Mostly cuz they messed with the colors and the number of Rangers. But the American version comes from the Japanese, too, so I guess they could only go with the source material or something...

ETA: Teen Titans! You want a good balance of boy stuff and girl stuff? Right here! And the plots are great, too. Justice League, though I've only seen a few episodes a few years ago. I heard good reviews about the most recent reboot.
