A question for airbrush users
« on: April 08, 2013, 07:28:55 AM »
The other weekend my dad won a Grex Airbrush at an RC event and is willing to share the tool with me for pony-painting-purposes (YAY! :D  ) So I have been delving into the depths of the internet to find information but am still having trouble getting answers, so I wanted to ask here in hopes of getting some insight :)

The biggest thing I need to figure out is what paints will work for both airbrush and pony. I already know the testors enamel paint doesn't play well with ponies (go ahead; ask how I know XD ), and I know that particle size and grain size of other paints can clog an airbrush, and that most paints need to be thinned.

Currently I use Folk Art and Americana acrylic paints as well as Viva Precious Metal Colour, since I know they work with the plastic of the ponies. Would those work for an airbrush? What paint brands do most people here use with an airbrush? Thanks!

Not sure about your particular brand of airbrush, but just regular acrylics work. You just have to dilute them with water. Folk Art is what I use normally, sometimes Liquitex. The key is making the paint as thin as like milk or nail polish in the bottle. And if you mess up, you can always clean out your airbrush. :) The best way is to play with it a bit first before you start on a custom, that way you get a feel for it. Hope this helps some.

I don't have an airbrush, but this person has made a very in depth video about thinning paints.

protip though; windex or any ammonia based cleaner will completely strip off anything that you use pledge futureshine on.

I love Createx Airbrush paints for full body repaints.  It is ready to go and is so smooth and easy to use!  You can think down most acrylics with water, as mentioned above.

createx are great and are designed to be used around 40psi I think.  The info is all on their website.  My Little airbrush runs around 15psi so I gave to thin even them,  but it's nothing a bit of experimenting can't fix.  I use all sorts in my airbrush. thin the paint down more than you think at first. If it just runs off like water thicken it slightly wipe it off and try again. That's how I always work it out. You can seal between layers if you're worried too,  good luck!

Thank you all so much for the great information. I find it so much better to get advice from people working the same art medium than just relying on outside websites. I found a lot of helpful tips, but nothing as useful as what I'm hearing here :)
