Removable Masks

I know I've seen people do them, but I can't get them right. How do you do them?

I lay a layer of saran wrap or aluminum foil on the face and sculpt directly to that, then allow to dry and remove the inner layer.

That's how I made the gasmask on this one anyway---

i sculpt the clay on the face and bake it on the pony. after its done, i run it under water to cool down and carefully peel it off or squish the head to pop it off.

Thanks everyone for the tips ^^ I'll try it again on my next off day. How thick should it be?

you dont want it too thin that it may break when removing it or trying to peel it off. so the desired thickness is up to you or what the baking instructions says.

here is how one of mine looks and it is removable.

thank you for the LOL

I understand how you make the mask removable, but I'm curious how you get them to stay back on? Why aren't they slipping and falling off?

I can't help it!

DH, WHAT did you do??

Post Merge: March 09, 2013, 07:58:19 AM

I did what BardbedDragon suggested.  I put saran wrap on the painted face, then a small layer of clay, then a fine wire mesh for durability then more clay.  Worked beautifully!  I used apoxie sculpt, which is a fabulous air dry clay.

Typically you would be OK with aluminum foil being used in the oven. Don't get it too hot you can bake it longer and a lower temp. Also if the piece is thin enough you can immerse it in boiling water to cure it too.

well, mine rest on the face well enough that it wont fall off. i guess it can depend on how big and extravagant your mask is to know whether or not if it can stay on its own or if it does need help from a magnet or whatever that isnt glue.

Mine will be sitting over the ears as well, so no magnets needed.
