American Girl Doll help, Remove ink?
« on: March 07, 2013, 12:19:18 PM »
Hey everyone!

I recently started the grand adventure of American Girl collecting, and I was pretty lucky in which a coworker gave me two of her daughters  (of whom is my age and no longer wanted them) PM dolls (Felicity and Kristen) I was totally beyond excited when I got them. Aside from some hair issues, they are in great shape. SO! While I was waiting to buy Felicity a new wig, I picked up a couple of outfits from Our Generation at Target, since I thought that they were cute and affordable, and hey a girl has to have outfits!. So I got this lovely little outfit:

I had it on Felicity for about a week and a half to two weeks, when I decided to changer her outfit and I saw this:

Its on both arms, and is pretty bad, I tried couple of different things to get the "ink" off, but nothing seemed to work (I've tried soap and water, hot soap and water, sani wipes, ect.) I didnt want to try anything to drastic because I'm not sure what the effects would be in the vinyl. So I decided I would pretty much just live with it, and have her wear outfits with longer sleeves, until today, when I finally got her new wig in, an saw this:

The ink color is exactly the same as the stuff on her arms, and its been about three weeks since I removed the outfit that I though caused the damage, but I dont know how it could have gotten on her nose and side of her face! She sits on a book shelf, with Kirsten (who has had nothing happen to her) away from any light, with, of course, nothing touching her face (especially her nose!).

Any ideas on what could be causing these blue marks? Or better yet how can I remove them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Check out AGPlaythings ... they have a massive forum devoted to adult collectors.  :)  There are a variety of things you can do to repair... it's similiar to MLP but a bit different.

Oh this is what I do for that: zit cream

It will not harm the vinyl..it will bleach out the ink

I usually put a nice dot on each stain, set my dolls in full sun for 5 minutes and check...recheck often until I see they are gone.  The one on the nose may or may not remove..that's an odd looking stain.  But don't be afraid of the acne cream on AG dolls. I have repaired so many this way.  I am an AG collector restorer.  Good luck...make sure the sun is hot...if its not hot yet..wait until summer for this project.  You need light, head and cream in order for this to work.  Don't leave them out in the sun for hours.  Also cover everything on the doll but the areas you are working on. I use a towel.  If you are nervous using this product, use it on one stain first and see how it works.  I usually only put it on the stain, not all over the area around the stain.  This does not work on any red stain...those are impossible.  If its blue this method will work.

When you got the doll the marks were not on her face??? I am wondering if its a mold if this is the case...or a vinyl reaction.  If this method doesn't work then it might be a reaction in the vinyl.  I have never seen that on an AG doll and I have them from the early 90's.

Tula has good advice.  I have to restore a few of mine that have spots but haven't done it yet.  :)

To fix the colors in the clothing - soak the clothes in vinegar for like an hour, then rinse thoroughly in cold water.  Dry flat.  Should help!
