Generation 1 ponies are...
« on: March 05, 2013, 05:13:28 PM »
I read another thread just now that kinda made me think of this.. I wont mention the other thread because it's irrelevant lol.

Anyway are the Generation 1 ponies the only ponies with a variety of poses?
I don't think I've seen any other Gen with a sitting or "rearing" pose..

Correct me if I'm wrong, I just think it be nice to see more poses in G4 though.

G3s had a nice variety, and G2s did too but to a lesser extent (they made up for it with awesome color schemes :lovey: ). I'm not familiar with 3.5s though...

I love the G1's, I have a Powder that is kinda looking up it's cute, but I like to collect all G4 brushable sizes but they are all pretty much feet to the ground and their heads turn but still needs more poses.. well other than the one leg raised.. but a sitting, or rearing or even the Looking up would be great :)

yhea G4 doesn't have much in the way of poses it's a shame really. The BB ponies do have some nice molds though they have a rearing pose hopefully we'll start to see something new in the years to come

G3 has quite a lot of poses! Sadly G4 doesn't have a whole lot, but personally it's not a huge deal breaker for me. Sure, I'd like to see more variety, but since there's not a ton of new G4 ponies released at the moment anyway I'm fine with them sharing the same couple poses for now.

I think the reason G1 (and G3) have more poses is because they weren't made with turnable necks.  (At least, G3s initially weren't made with turnable necks.)

If you turn the head on a G2 or G4 a hundred and eighty degrees, it still looks fairly "natural"; it looks like the pony is looking back over their shoulder.   Now try turning Bow-Tie's head 180 degrees.  Yeah, her head is now upside down.

That doesn't explain the lack or rearing or sitting poses for the other generations because those actually WOULD look more or less all right turned, I think.  But it is part of the reason G1 and G3 tend to have more poses (and more variety of poses) overall, IMO.

I like the turning heads, but I wish Hasbro would stop worrying about whether a head looks "right" when it's turned "too much".  I mean, Barbie can turn her head backwards like an OWL and her toys still sell.

I think the G1s had better everything! Not millions of reissues (the G2s and G3s had some of the same ponies released over and over just like G4). More color variety. Tons of poses. Tons of new characters. Lots of themes!

G1 will always be my most loved.

The thing that I love the most about g1 is the variety in their poses! There's just so much motion in them, it's so nice. I really want to sit down and do a drawing of some of my ponies. I'd kill to see some of that variety in the newer ponies, especially the princesses. <3

While it's true all G1's pose were probably due to not being able to turn the heads, the '80s was just a bit more creative with things like that. G3 did have a few different poses with turning heads and many without, but still lots of poses till they got to the Core 7 non-sense... G3.5 pretty much followed the same/similar pose for every pony but the line didn't last long enough for them to get any real poses to them...

G4 really lacks poses for the brushables.. and I can say it's probably due to how they do the heads and necks... While BBs do have various poses I call them the mini main 5 because other than special characters -all- the ponies are in either a RD/FS pose, Twilight pose, Rarity pose, or AJ pose... though all the dang waves!

I think the variety of poses in G1 is helped by a variety of types of pony. For example, with boys and sea ponies, etc in the line, I think that adds to our perception of variety over all in the G1 line as thats more sets in more poses. Over all I do think G1 seems to have the most variety but G3 did make a determined effort in many ways as well. G4, to date, is certainly a disappointment.

G3 sort of has a rearing pose: Twinkle Twirl's pose is rearing if you put her hind foot on a magnet.
Oh! My Little Wiki has a whole page on the pose: http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Rearing_Pose
I'll put something here some time
