Barbie expert needed? Or something?
« on: February 27, 2013, 12:28:26 PM »
Hey!

Ok, so yeah, I really don't know that much about Barbie these days but I've got a project in mind that I've been wanting to do for awhile. I tried to accomplish it with pullips and taeyangs, but they just got so expensive + wigs + new eyes, etc. etc. So, I haven't really found an alternative (though I keep dreaming about 'normie' MH-style dolls but that'll likely never happen XD) so I decided to buckledown and use Barbie/Ken.

I'm hoping some of the newer dolls in the basics lines and similar may be what I'm looking for but I don't even know where to start.
I need 8 dolls (possibly nine)

2 - Asian influenced guys
1 - Asian guy
1- White guy
2 - two different asian girls
1 - asian influenced girl
1- white girl

Also, does anyone know if the newer ones are in any way articulated? (these types of dolls have never come to my wal-mart and i've only ever dealt with a couple of guys' heads)

And where I can find them online and if they aren't super expensive?

I think that's it >.>

Asian males, the easiest way is to buy Barbie's DoTW (Dolls of The World): Japanese Ken.

For asian female, you can get any DoTW form asian countries. Such as: Korea, Japan, China. They also have several that fit the bill from the 80s to current.

I Can be... is a barbie play line. Just look for I can be President, and they have an asian doll. I've seen her both at Toys R Us and Walmart.

You will find little to no articulation with the dolls listed above. However you can rebody them. Women on Fashionistas (you can get your "white girl" this way) and Ken on a Harley Davidson Ken body (the only truly articulated male body available from Barbie - they have a semi-articulated male Fashionistas doll"Ryan" or "Ken").

If you use ebay, under dolls there is a category for barbie and you can find mix-lots sometimes or go specific to Nude Dolls and find them for lower prices than store-bought. Same with clothing, you'd have to just look around for what fits your "inspired" standards. ;]

Hope this helps.

ALSO: Ideals and inspiration, you'll find sometimes you can just mod the paint job on a "white doll."

I think the Barbie Fashionistas line is articulated at the knees, elbows, and wrists in addition to the shoulders and hips; I know they were a couple years ago because I had one, but I'm not sure if they still are.

As for finding them online for reasonable, I honestly don't know. There's literally TONS of nude Barbies listed on eBay, so that'd probably be your best bet for finding what you want, but I have no clue what the typical price is.

I have a few that I'm looking to sell; maybe some of them would work for you? Here's a link to the thread where I posted the pictures: Barbies for sale

Ugh, barbie, I doesn't like you >.< Too vast and nowhere near enough articulation to suit my needs. I think I'm doomed to never get this done *sadsad Ravie* Some of the DotW dolls are super pricey now. I kinda wish I hadn't let my sister ruin mine ^^;

What about fashion royalty? does anyone know much about them and what kind of price point they have?

Sadly, Fashion Royalty has a Much higher price point. We're talking over a $100 for a single doll usually.

I just bought a Fashionista Raquelle and she's Asian! She's a beautiful doll and cost me ten bucks on sale, usually seventeen here in Canada. That's all I know, though....

I can't offer much more help than anyone else has sadly. This website has the different face sculpts used over the years http://kattisdolls.net/faces.htm

I'm not sure if it goes right up to now though. The fashionistas are definitrly the most articulated. You may be able to re-body some other Barbie heads onto them depending on tone I guess?

I know nothing of Barbie, but I have to ask all you experts, would My Scene fit any of these requirements?  I think their heads are nicely proportional to MH, but that could just be me:)

Never seen one undressed though.

EDIT:  Just saw one for sale.  I realize now they are very not articulated:(  It's too bad.  I like their heads!

I thought about obitsu, but they just come in two colors, pink-white and orange and the male heads look odd.

Oh- my scene. I do like my scene better than most other barbie lines and I even have some boys (i stole their clothes for taeyangs...and then i sold everything a few months ago >.<) in a bag in my closet. I don't think they've suddebly gotten expensive, but maybe fairly hard to find. Hmm. I know the boys are slightly more articulated than the girl. Maybe rebodies could be a possibility. I'll have to think about that. Thanks for reminding me about them justkitter!

I think I've got a plan of action now! My Scene with Fashionista rebodies (except in the case of the guys, who're moderately articulated themselves)

Now comes the hard part, deciding who to get!

thanks everyone for the help!
