I am really noticing this on TE Bright Eyes. On two totally separate occasions/transactions, I rescued them from grimy pony lots. Their bodies were COVERED in a light film of purple ink stuff. They were evenly coated in every nook and cranky. It came right off with magic eraser leaving just a little discoloration here and there, but I am just so puzzled!!

Was it really that common for kids to coat their ponies in...inky stuff? Part of me makes me question if it's plastic deterioration with the ink or something leaching out?

At first I thought it was just some odd case with that first pony, but coming across it again makes me suspicious, lol.

On bright eyes it's the dye not being evenly incorporated into the vinyl. Some of them are like that sadly. Can happen to sea breeze seapony, windy, seashell as well.

I had that on my Bright Eyes too!  Once the purpley film was gone, though, she was fine and  has been since, and hopefully will remain so. ^.^

Haven't noticed this with the rest of my blue ponies so far (knock wood)...

Wishlist - I'm back on (semi-) active buying again... can't buy everything on my wish list all at once (yay, back-to-school and tuition fees), but I am still looking to plump up my collection a bit more: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,380638.0.html

Yeah, once the film is off the surface it doesn't come back. At least none of mine have had it return. 10+ years after being cleaned.

Yes as FantasticFirefly says the pigment for that shade is not a happy one. Red is generally a little more unstable anyway but obviously a certain range of pigments in that light blue/lilac range tend to "break out" of the plastic due to a chemical break down. White Windys, white Blossoms and grey Seashells are probably examples of this same thing happening and no more of the pigment remaining in the plastic.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
