custom help. poofie hair.
« on: February 25, 2013, 09:35:32 AM »
hi i'm trying to do a custom with poofie hair, but i want to be able to dye part of it. like a gradient dye.
i was hoping i could use yarn. but the one i got. (cotton) dyed well, but when i comb it out it almost all comes out in the comb.

what kinda material can i use. kinda like a perfume puff. gotta start with a cream or white so the gradient will look right.

um... id actually pick Foxfire's brain. she does a lot of wool spinning, and dyes it herself. she can prolly give you some tips or raw wool to test on if you ask nice-like =] ill text her to reply here.

The color is coming out or the yarn is? Are you working with yarn or with unspun cotton? Brushing unspun cotton or wool will make tufts come out in the brush. I'm not sure what will stop that other than using a longer staple (a staple is the length of the individual hairs of wool, how long they let it grow before shearing the sheep). I'm not much of a customizer so I'm not sure what you artsy types do, but working with unspun wool is a hobby of mine. Let me do a little research and I'll see what I can come up with for you.

Is this a color question or a cotton/wool question? If we are talking about color coming out,  when working with wool try adding a little bit of vinegar to the dyebath or washing it in diluted vinegar before dropping it in the dye bath. Working with cotton needs something else but it escapes my memory at the moment. I'll look that up real quick too. I have alot of wool/cotton and dye books.

it's more of a cotton/wool question.
i got the dye to take really well. (maybe a little too dark, but that's ok) the prob is when i try to comb it out. or unravel it.
wondering if i should switch to a different type of yarn etc. i used 100 cotton yarn. though the one i was going to get was acrylic. seemed looser.

Cotton yarn is going to all brush out :( It'd be better to use acrylic yarn. I don't think it would take to dye as well as cotton, but they do make dye for synthetic fabrics.. o~o

I would brush it out to the desired thickness/length on the pony, then dye it.  A light teasing when its dry should restore its shape.
