Sealant~Again
« on: February 18, 2013, 08:25:06 PM »
So, I need to seal a blindbag bony and I have the sealor's dullcote spray. Will this work? And if so what is the best way to go about it? I really don't want to mess her up because I was already supposed to have finished her for a friend but got busy. Any tips would be most appreciated.

I had trouble spraying my last bb custom, it ended up with those yucky dust speckles all over it. It's hard to get a thin even coat on something so small with an arisol imo.  I'd say make a few practice sprays first, be careful not to get too close so it doesn't go on too thick and run. Also not too far away so you get droplets.  Let it dry really well in between coats if you spray more than once. Watch humidity as a humid environment can make sealant sticky. Thinks. Good luck!

Would a liquid sealant work better? Where would I even find it?

Never had issues with Testors Dullcote, but you have to pick days where the relative humidity won't effect the Dullcote. Also, shake, shake, shake!

What's the highest you would recommend allowing the humidity to be?

If you look outside and the pavement looks wet even though the sky is clear, then it's too humid to spray.

I cheat though (I live on an island, when isn't it humid?) and blast it with a hair dryer on low immediately after spraying.

Thank you for that tip. Never heard that one before. Just for the sake of getting it done I may use your hair dryer trick though.

What if I sprayed some in a container, and then kind of painted it on. Would that work?

It would be much cheaper to just buy a pot of clear seal.  You can get it in most hobby shops in with the paints, or ask someone to show you where to find it.
Another trick that I've seen but not yet tested on ponies is acrylic floor polish.  Future shine with pledge or whatever it's called may vary based on your location- but apparently modellers swear this stuff is magic.

Again, I personally have not tested this yet on ponies, but I plan on it next time I have something ready to seal.

I wouldn't recommend that.  It's not really made for this.  It dries too quickly in my experience.  I think you'll be fine to spray just make sure the area is clean and well ventilated and the bottle isn't really old or something.  I think I didn't shake enough and that's why I got the speckled thing.

I finally got brave enough to just do it and so far so good. How long should I wait before painting on top of it?
