Recent blunders?
« on: February 19, 2013, 09:10:56 PM »
Ever have one of those customs that just "doesn't go right?"

I am currently trying to get my half of my personal "persona peacock" swap with Okami Amaterasu finished, and have to restart the main cutie, after trying to add the black lines for the wolf and realizing I made the flames too low. Which means painting over the red. With white paint that has taken about 5 coats to whiten the bait with in the first place.

-On top of 3 coats of a white that turned out to be pale gray next to the tail feathers.
-And I accidentially did her facial markings in dark red instead of bright red, so am gong over those too. Fixed! :D Once the red is dry, I can paint her eyes and eyeshadow. ^.^

The only "good" thing about all this is I just started making a second pony to send her while waiting for paint to dry. :blush:

But Gods I'm so behind on this pony... She's been finished with mine for months. :cry:

So whilst I am waiting for the newest layer of touch-up white to dry, I'm wondering - what custom blunders have folks been dealing with? :wondering:

Surely I'm not the only one... Please?

all sorts of issues with one I've been doing for a private swap with someone actually.... I've started over three times, and undone what I've done to baits like 6 times. they've been done with mine for quite a while too so I feel bad :(

I got commissioned to make a pony for someone's daughter. she wanted her kid's name on it, and I spelled it wrong. XD

that's the most recent. one of the best ones I've ever done was super glue related. The glue was clogged but I squeezed pretty hard thinking it was empty. it just suddenly GOOSHED everywhere. I accidently my fingertips together, and then I took the pony in my teeth to pull apart my fingers. I got the glue on my lip and ended up gluing my lip to the pony. Long story short my lip bled like a stuck pig and I had to soak my fingertips in acetone forever to get them separate.

Oh .....my................*completely horrified*

Recently my biggest blunder has been with my Ocean pony. Got a Hidden Treasure G3 bait, and couldn't get over how much her cutie mark looked like a pink starfish. Decided to make an ocean pony and keep it on there. Spent about 6 hours so far doing gradients in blues and greens, she has beachy legs with actual sand (from modelling supplies) and a tide line in foamy white with tiny mermaid bubbles. So It came to doign the details on the "ocean" part of her, and I thought that although I've heat cured her, I'll seal her too - in case I make mistakes. However, as I brushed on the watered down Mod-Podge, every brush stroke dragged away layers of blue. Now she's completely ruined. I can't really start the colours again because of the sand and the bubbles. Devastated.

My biggest blunder has been with a commission. This commissioner was super patient and has been waiting on their pony for months, and I'd finally finished painting and hairing their pony, when I realized I'd haired it wrong. These are ponies made on my own sculpted resin cast base, with a trench I superglue the hair into (using Deekary's method for hairing a plastic haired Celestia). So I couldn't just rip the hair out, and had to saw it all off and start over on a completely new base- repatching the resin, resanding the clay, repainting, everything. I finally finished hairing her completely (and correctly!) when she fell from my desk and broke a feather of her wing off. Normally I'd be able to just superglue it back on, but the missing feather is nowhere to be found! So I'm going to have to sculpt a new wing tip out of Sculpey and boil it to avoid melting the nylon hair, match the paint color and everything xD So this custom is taking me about 3 times as long as a normal one would, haha!

Physical and mental OUCHES all around it seems.  The worst I have is painting a body with a metallicy paint that just seems to get streakier as I go.  Also discovered that normal paint for the symbols does not like the metallic at all.  At some point I'm paint stripping it seems.

Oh the usual- super gluing my hands, slicing my fingertips because of knife slips, burning myself because of my impatience, dropping my freshly painted or still sculpting pony onto the linty dusty floor...  Stupid clumsy fingers!  I hate it when I get all ham handed.
I once melted the body of a g4.  But that's because my oven goes waaay hotter than what I actually set it to and I didn't know that at the time.

I don't mind failures and set backs when it comes to ponies since I just see it as one more learning experience, and sometimes there's some really nice results that happen completely by accident.

My most recent was a pony I was making for a contest on PonyIsland. The bait itself turned out to be a pain because there were all these random little dots of color that I didn't see when I was looking her over and baiting her. Then the two wings I sculpted got bumped and came loose (good thing I always make the wings in wire first and attach them inside the body). And chalk pastels just gone wrong, it was awful. Get juuuust a little on your hands and game over when it comes to a white pony!

Just last week I shipped off a pony for a swap and when I was looking at the pictures afterwards, I discovered that I had made a mistake on it. Very blatantly. I don't want to say too much, because it hasn't arrived yet, and while it's a definite mistake that my perfectionist nature is freaking out over, it's not really obvious (swap leader didn't notice it in the pictures I sent her, either). Just one quarter-inch black line missing . . . smh . . . :cry:

@ Alatariel-Silimaure: That's about how I'm feeling, yes. :(

@Vampasaurus: Uh... Wow. I've had glue burn me through my jeans before, but certainly nothing like that! O_O;

@StrawberryMeadow: Aw, that stinks! :( Why didn't the paint stick to the pony instead of the Modge-podge? :(

@Zaphy: *nods* It's no fun when pony parts escape and hide. I recently had to hunt for the horn to a styling pony, after finding my Dad moved stuff around on me. 9.9

@Rybett: That's terrible! I don't like stripping ponies in the middle of winter. XP

@CarnationTwirl: That's a good viewpoint to have. :) I like this view.

@DancingPhoenix: I think chalk pastels all over your hands when you're trying to do *anything* with another color is a disaster. :lol:

@LeighAnnApanites: The perfectionist in me knows how you feel about that. :(

@Aflame: Another for the glued-my-fingers-together club! :D

My pony is back on track, I think. I got the eyeshadow done last night, and the base color for her eyes. I found I did the shape perfectly, though the eye spaces are different shapes on either side of the pony's head. XD I shall be tackling the cutie again tonight, I think. :)
