Problems with pony presents
« on: February 14, 2013, 05:12:09 AM »
My family likes to get ponies to contribute to my G1 collection, but the problem is that they have no idea about any of the quality issues that ponies can have. It's realyl sweet of them and adorable that they want to help, but sometimes I get ponies from them in less than stellar condition. I'm looking to fix them but I'm not sure on how to go about it.

TAF Sugarberry has incredibly nice hair, which I've heard can be a problem, but she's got a yellowed body. (with all sorts of ingrained dirt) How would I fix this? I'd sunfade her, but a large portion of her body would be covered and it might leave her looking patchy.

Baby Cotton Candy: Frizzed, cut, and faded hair with a tail rust to top it all off. Would it be better to rehair this pony or try to fix that mess?

Creamsicle: Practically minty, just a few stray ink and dirt marks. They're close to her symbols, though. What should I use to clean this off?

Sorry that all my posts are mainly on how to fix my messed up ponies.

For Sugarberry, if you can't scrub the dirt/yellowing off, you can actually paint over the symbols with ordinary white craft paint in order to sunfade the rest of her. The just wash/rub the paint off afterwards. I forget who figured out you could do that, but it's genius and works really well! I've sunfaded 2 Sugarberries already with that technique. Just don't use colored paint or it might stain the body.

Baby Cotton Candy...hard to say without a picture, but I would think ultimately it would all depend on how you feel about the haircut cut and if you're OK with the fading or repinking it. Personally, I'd try to fix the hair first, then see if I'm OK with the result or not.

Creamsicle: What do you normally use for basic cleaning? Might have to sunfade the ink though.

I understand where you are coming from totally.  My aunty use to try and buy ponies off of Ebay for be...let's just say I only ever got fakies.  I just kindly let me aunty know that I loved what she was doing but she didn't have to do that.

Your posts should be always be about whatever you need to ask for - no apologies as most of us are always happy to help! :)

That is sweet that your family purchase you ponies and hopefully you can fix these ponies up.

TAF Sugarberry: Elisto is spot on - because the paint used on pony symbols is water resistant but craft paint isnt you can use it to cover symbols safely. However if you are not 100% confident on using that your only other option is to cover the symbols with cut out tinfoil - while its a safer option for someone unsure about paint types it is a potentially tricky and time consuming job to cover up all those strawberries and vines. But after the paint or the tinfoil you should be able to sunfade the worst of the yellow away.

Baby Cotton Candy: As a pony in even in nice condition she is only worth around $3, running higher sometimes if she has super pink hair. So its a 6 and half a dozen call; you could certainly clean the tail rust and flat iron out the frizz to restore but if the hair cut is really bad and because her hair colour is so prone to fading you would perhaps be best rehairing. This one is a judgement call depending on the length of trim.

Creamsicle: I would initially try a very small piece of magic eraser on the marks and then acetone if those dont work as you mention just be very careful not to go on to the symbols. If neither work then you could try sunfading the ink. As for the first - a good scrub with baby wipes or a cloth and soap should remove the worst.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
