Need help on a restore!
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:49:05 PM »
I would do this myself but this is beyond me and I am afraid that I would damage her.  I have this pony:

And whoever had her before me did something to her and the cream colored paint is sticky and has little hairs stuck to it. I think it would have to be removed without damaging the design and then repainted.

Why not go over her with a sealant?? That would probly fix the stickyness without having to strip the paint

I thought of doing that but because of all the little hairs attached, they would look bad. Here is a close up pic.

Oh wow that is tricky. Seen as the paint is cream (and one would assume the pony is "white" though it would help to know which pony it was before the customization) you could take a q-tip and some acetone or maybe just nail polish remover and work at the badly fuzzy areas. You could test the acetone on the foot first because if she's white underneath you might not even have to worry about the paint :)

Someone posted on another thread that they use really fine grade sandpaper for eliminating brush strokes - you may be able to use something like that to remove the fluff, then just seal it again after. It was a specialty paper, I think from a model/hobby shop...

AHHH no please never use nail polish remover!
The level of Acetone is too weak and just smears the paint around.

I'd definately think about using super fine sandpaper or a buffer pad before stripping her.
She's so lovely :)

Oh wow, she's really pretty! Apparently they used a wrong kind of sealant in the first place... I agree on trying fine sandpaper or maybe gently washing her with plain water and a soft brush, like a toothbrush. Acrylic paint should be water resistant enough if you're gentle. Then if you manage to get the dust off, definitely seal her again with something that takes care of the stickiness. :)

Yeah I received a custom with that problem (dirt, hairs, stray glitter) before (not the same artist) and I tried removing the heavy, tacky sealant to get rid of the mess.  It was a disaster.  I hate to say it, but it might be safer to just reseal her with something like Testor's Dullcote spray and ignore the dust if you can.

The pony I tried to "fix" went so badly for me that I very sadly ended up having to strip the pony.  :shudder:  It wasn't from the Arena and I will NOT purchase from this artist again.

That being said, Lady Littlefox Ponies are pretty hard to come by and are just gorgeous!

Have you considered trying rubbing alcohol?  I'm not sure if it'll damage the paint or not so test on a discrete area first!!!
Actually I just decided to try it on a pony I did that had similar poor sealing issues and grunge attraction.  Rubbing alcohol didn't do much, but straight vodka was starting to work.  It left her slightly tacky right after, but a combination of hair dryer blasting and dullcote appears to have fixed it.  I'm sure if I put in the time scrubbing with vodka and a soft cloth I could have cleaned all the grunge off, but I was just doing a test run.

I would sand as a last resort personally.  If you do go the sandpaper route, get something like K&S sanding film in a micro fine assortment.

i used rubbing alcohol to remove flocking. it might work here without damaging the paint work
a magic eraser might work as well

worst case, you could mask off the saddle area, hair and eyes and have someone airbrush her cream again

I am sad to report that the magic eraser did not work at all. The little hairs are still there  -_- Vodka is next on my list if i don't drink it first.

*hides* I've never actually tried to use nail polish remover myself, I suppose I just figured it would be less abrasive than pure acetone ;)
