So how would you restore a discolored non-white pony
« on: February 04, 2013, 09:45:22 PM »
Ok, my of my experience with restoring discolored ponies has been in the white pony department... when sun fading is used...

However, recently I received a purple baby pony (who I'm still doing my part of the trade with the person) that has a mismatched color head and body... I'm pretty sure I might have to sun fade her to get her to match again, her body is the right color but the head is much lighter...

Would you guys suggest sun fading the body or something else (other than the fact she needs a bath but that won't help the mismatch situation)

I love working on these little baby ponies and I'm hoping to get this girl to look as good as new as possible XD

I wouldn't do much with a purple pony if its a G1. Purple seems to be the most unstable color for G1s and you'll likely see some color wash away with cleaners and fade to a more greyish with the sun. Let us know which pony it is and we'll help you figure out if its a common problem with that pony. If you really can't stand the sight of her than its probably best to give her to a less picky collector. I've never used sunfading to fix a mismatched head on a colored pony.

I'd assess her after a bath, I've had one pony that looked just a bit dirty but perfectly matched, after the bath the head and body were completely different.

You could try a little sunfading on the body only, make sure you watch it carefully.

Bump.

I was wondering the exact same thing: I have a NC Mommy Sweet Celebrations, that's turned from light blue to green (quite possibly due to cigarette smoke). I was thinking about sun fading her, but then I remembered that sun fading can produce mixed results on ponies that aren't either yellow or white.

So my question is, are there any other methods that could possibly restore her original body color, or is she a lost cause? :(

My idea was to restore her, I'm not that picky of a collector but that's the reason I got her. I wouldn't mind if she was all one light color, but I don't want to give her up to be possibly baited ^^; I have too much heart for these baby unis if that makes sense

The pony in question is Baby Rainribbon

Why not give her a necklace? That does help to hide the difference. Mine is the same way, I have her hair combed to cover her neck line. Don't think we've come up with a solution for this issue yet...

I think quite a few baby Rainribbons have this problem. The only thing I would possibly think of would be to attempt to dye her head darker, but RIT dye isn't permanent and you'd have to keep that lovely hair out of it. You could certainly try to sunfade her body or attempt to wash out her body color but that could make her even worse. She's in no way bait condition.

That looks like pigment problems unfortunately - pretty common in ponies of this colour, Windy, Blossom, Seashell, etc.

When it comes to restoring coloured ponies it very much depends what the colour change is a result of - if its yellowing with age or exposure to something like nicotine, then yes I agree sun fading can bring the colour back by simply getting rid of what is essentially a surface staining. If its a result of pigment leaking or fading, then you obviously cant bring the colour back so you would have to fade or bleach out the rest of the pony. The problem in a case like this would be you are not guaranteed to get an even colour. Personally her body looks in nice condition, I would be tempted to try and track down a baity body Rainribbon and simply swap heads. Colours again wont be identical but they would be closer.

Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

I typically try sunfading, even on colored ponies. I'm currently sunfading a head-body-mismatched Sweet Pocket, and it seems to be coming along fairly well. This one doesn't quite look like it would work, but I would try it anyway. Just cover everything but the head so that if it doesn't work, you haven't damaged anything else and can swap heads with another one.

Such a good question. I've been trying to fade a Whizzer with a darker pink head to match the body and it almost seems to take longer to fade color than it does just white ponies. I didn't do anything but wrap her in tinfoil  and leave her out in the sun though. I hope you find better results and can share them!

I might actually have to fade the body instead of the head, her neck ring is actually the same color as the head and even before I gave her a bath I noticed the edges of her hooves were fading a little... about the same color as the head.. what I might do is use white paint to cover the symbols on her flanks (I remember someone did that with sunfading a pony) and fade the body while I'm at work... (leaving her in the back window and hoping I'm facing the right way to catch the most sun)
