North Star deflock?
« on: January 26, 2013, 12:07:34 PM »
So I have this North Star from the flea market, she came all dirty and I gave her a good bath.

She is in fair condition, however her flocking is very thin and is missing in some spots in her belly, chin, throat, inside the legs.. it would be ok to deflock her?

Here she is

I was thinking in deflock, but I'm afraid in harming her, mostly when I love so softs fur, and I don't want to use acetone in her.

There's a safe way in doing deflocks without acetone?

Inside me there's a voice saying "deflock her, her flock is not looking good" and other that "loves so softs and say keep her that way" , LOL

Can I see pics of a deflocked North Star?

Acetone is really one of the most efficient ways to deflock... that, and Jasco paint remover.  So I wouldn't try to deflock with anything else.

Also North Star's not that HTF so go ahead and deflock away if that's what you want and if she's got flaws.

I'm afraid I don't have pics of a deflocked one YET - I have one waiting for the acetone but I haven't had time to start yet.

I see thanks!how do you protect the eyes and the symbol from acetone?

I'm not sure if I can get pure acetone, but I can get the nail polish remover.

I've always avoided going too close to those areas with my big cotton swabs, and switch over to boiling water and manicure sticks when I have to gently scrape the symbols and along the eyes.  It's not 100% perfect but it will do!

Go ahead and deflock her.  I personally think she's a great canidate for it.  It's sad when the ss ponies get rubs around the lips and eyes and if they are brightly colored underneath all the flocking the color really stands out.  You'll have to show us pictures if you decide to deflock and when she is done. :)

Here is one, although she is behind Lofty. I have a whole set of SS pegasi that I deflocked, although I am doing another Hippity Hop because I like the new one's hair better and she was so dingy she was begging for a deflock.

So I may be biased, but I say go ahead and deflock!

I love deflocks!  It's my plan to eventually to all the SS's deflocked but still looking for the just the right candidate for each one.  I agree with others and think it would be OK to deflock that SS Northstar.  If she were rarer or harder to find then I would say no, but she is quite common.  Good luck!

The so soft version is common enough and she has enough flocking loss that I think you certainly shouldnt feel bad if you do decide to deflock her :)

I agree the best options are acetone or paint remover - but subject to how poor condition the glue is in, you could first try to simply soak her in super hot water and then use a nail brush to slowly circle over the flocking - sometimes the water and the abrasion of the brush is enough to remove flocking on ponies.

If you do end up using the chemicals it is very hard not to damage at least the symbols in some way so you need to be prepared for perhaps having to touch them up.

Jasco adhesive remover rarely hurts the symbols unless you scrape at them hard.

Wow they look gorgeous  :lovey: love how clean they look and the colors are so impressive mostly Hippty Hop.

Thank you all for the help, now I decided to go for the deflock for this pony.  :)

It would be my first deflock proyect  hopefully it will turn out well.

Now that I hold her again in the daylight I noticed small particles of the flocking flying off while I touch her  so the glue is very damaged.

Thanks, I will try the hot water first to prevent damaging the symbols.

It is odd but the areas were her flocking is fuller is over her symbols, ears and the underparts of the hoofs , the rest is damaged, this is reversed from the areas were so softs are commonly damaged

Northstar is a pretty common so-soft, and she looks quite threadbare, the poor dear!  I'd probably finish her deflocking too, if she was mine, given how much of it is already gone.  If only toys could talk, what tales she would tell.

Thank you! I love the way the darker So Soft's (Hippity Hop, Twist, etc.) look deflocked as well. They are some of the boldest-colored ponies that were made.

Have fun and good luck with your deflocking, and post pics when you're finished!

Yeap, great work,  they look so clean like they never had flocking before.

I stared the deflock today using boiling water, she is coming up nice however I just noticed that the color of her body is faded so she most licky was out in the sun for several days.

As the color of the body is lavander and in the part inside the head and body she is a brighter shade of pink  that was a surprise  -_-

So she will look different from other deflocked North Stars  >_<  but at least the symbol doesn't have rubs and they look fine, she even has her blush.

She still needs work, so I will post pics when she is finished.

Agree, I will be saving to get in the future a better North Star wit nice flocking , and keep this one deflocked.

I know what you mean about if the toys could talk, one time I got a G3 Florsithya who had car oil inside her body, and a High Flyer wit piercings in the ears.

I say deflock her. I have a SS Northstar in about the same condition that I have been meaning to deflock for years now, but have been too chicken to do it. lol
