have you tried the tool-knot method?make a real knot in the middle of the hair, but a pin in the hole you want to rehair, put the knot-hair on your tool, pin out of the pony, knot in. sometimes you could need more pushes, but it will stay securely, as the plastic will pull itself together again and the hole will be to small for the knot afterwards.
If it was me I would take the neck plug back out and reglue the strand and repair the damaged spots. It's the best way to ensure the custom will survive the longest amount of time possible. What probably happened is when you brushed the plug broke and the bit came out because it wasn't glued firmly. I'm sure you could snag a little piece of hair on the dh trade board or you could thin out the tail a tiny bit if you only need one plug or two. You could also style around in and use that plug for a hair pin or flower.
If you need one I make cast resin replicas of G4 neck plugs. I am still in the trial phase but the ones I have sent out have held up fairly well. Unfortunately many of my testers never got back to me so I don't have a lot of reliable data on durability.
