bb & heat gun?
« on: September 02, 2012, 10:33:25 AM »
what happens if I hit a mlp bb w a heat gun? can I move it like stones and breyers or do I have to cut and sculpt? they are kinda hard to find so I don't want to kill them :/

Hi! (Love your avatar!)  BB are made of solid plastic that is somewhat soft, but very dense.  I would *guess* that heat gun would melt or burn them.  Breyers are made of a harder, hollow, and more lightweight plastic.  Depending on where you are, they retail for about $2-$3 each so you could snag a test subject.  Be careful though, some plastic produces toxic fumes when melted.

thanks very much. I may give a low setting a shot on the bb's, but seems like cut & sculpt will be the best way to do body alterations. thanks again for your input none of my Breyer/Stone cm buddies work with these <3 I am a junkie now and buy a handful whenever I see them! :)

Yeah, a heat gun will melt blind bag plastic. It'll get runny instead of doughy. They might carve easier if they're warmed up a little, though! It's worth a try if you have a particularly baity one kicking around.

Sorry for the long absence!  I used the heat gun on low and melted two bb's ears to look like Marwaris. I  found the plastic has memory, so I'd heat, pull w smooth  pliers, then cool, reheat and reshape because on low they kept wanting to bounce back to the original shape. When I was happy w them I painted nail glue gel resin over them to try to set and it's holding strong! Yay! Now it's just a matter of picking the paintwork. There was some bubbling (too hot) which required sanding and they need a full repaint. the hard part was getting the ears to match each other. I cheated on the 1st by doing the pony w only 1 ear showing lol :)

Wow, that turned out great!  Congrats!  Interesting idea with the nail glue resin too.

I was going to say I think they might fight it.  I know when I have played with them they do not seem inclined to do what either tinite or even strene is willing to do.  I know full size MLP do not work either, played with that already and got just about no where. LOL

Those look cute, are you going with realistic horse colors?
