@ NoDiv

You may be right, I have to ask Shannon about the color.

@ BarbedDragon

Did you test the Nylon by Restoredoll yet in relation to rehairing with the tool and styling?

Poking around Restoredoll.  Can someone translate "Nylatex" into a name/description that makes sense?
Is there a hair color comparison chart somewhere?  Like Restore:Retro:DH?  Did that make sense?  :frog:

Hi there- as far as I know Restore doll has completely different nylon colors, the names go by numbers (ie Blue 1, Blue 2, etc), BarbedDragon is right- the thickness of hanks is very nice. It's a little bit more difficult to take a curl, excellent however for straight hairstyles. It will take a curl if you boil perm it.  I've looked around for a description of Nylatex, but haven't found one, however, I am sure if you write to Kathy and ask her how to work with it, she would be happy to get back to you and help you out. She's pretty friendly :)

Our synthetic is still going through tests and such, but we do have MLP nylon (if you look under the "nylon" section in our site, that's where it is- all others are under synthetic on the US site, we do have more colors available in the pre-order section). The only comparible ones we have is Siberia=Blizzard, Uluru=Cherry Pie, Gelignite=Sour Apple Martini, and French Fancy=Old Bubblegum. Our Cherry Pie might be Hot Lips but I haven't got a sample to check against. We are working on getting the rest of the MLP colors.

pandabear_chan- I responded to your pm :)

Regarding hair, I do know that Enchantress has some of the same colors of Nylon that dollyhair has. These are the ones I know about:

RDUS/DH
Uluru- Cherry Pie,
Gelignite- Sour Apple Martini,
Siberia- Blizzard,
French Fancy- Old Bubblegum.

Okay I will chime in as I have worked with every hair type mentioned.

RestoreDoll - Nylon - is generous hanks but the diameter is bigger and the hank is shorter than the standard MLP hank (38") It is silky but not as flexible as DH nylon. Stylability is great for long straight hair but curling it is very tough. Fancy updos are easy with this. It can be dyed but takes a really long time and the colors are always muted.
- Saran - Again as said before it comes in a circular loop and you have to cut it yourself - no matter how straight you cut it you will have some uneven edges to trim up. Same as DH Saran. Heavier denier than nylon and is also much more difficult to style. Fancy updos are easy with this. Does not Dye. More colors than DH
- Nylatex - The texture is very similar to their nylon but with a slightly heavier feeling - I believe it is a blend of nylon and some other material. Again hard to curl and does not boil curl well - some lovely colors though that cannot be found in other hair types.

Retrodolls - I will mostly be referring to the US site on this commentary but will make a few comments on the regular site as well.

Monofiber silky - Wonderfully silky and smooth. You will have some hair loss when rehairing if you do not wet it. So much easier to work with wet. Now here is my tip for curling it - use a doll curling iron - it will withstand temps of up to 400 degress. A roiling boil is also necessary to use the boil curl method but I like the doll curling iron better - you can also use a standard size one - but this will take some experimenting on your part as not all curling irons are created equal. :) Some gorgeous colors not available in other hair types. Have yet to try and dye it but don't think it would take it.

52" Nylon (only at RetroDollsUS)  - This is nylon 6 just like DH's nylon only it is longer and feels a bit silkier. Takes dye and curling just like DH nylon. LOVE THIS HAIR SO MUCH - so versatile and the colors are not available anywhere else.

38" Nylon (available at both RetroDolls - However on the Retrodolls site (not US) it is intermixed with synthetic) - This is true nylon 6 - same manufacturer as my little pony and DH. The colors that match so far have already been talked about - so will skip ahead - same exact properties as DH nylon.

Synthetic - (Here is where there are some issues - on Retrodolls (not US) there is synthetic hair mixed into the nylon section and therefore labeled nylon). The other synthetics that are available through the RetroDolls site seem to be polypropylene and have similar characteristics to DH polypropylene - however DH polypropylene is more greasy looking and feeling. Hard to give good curls to and doesn't dye.

Saran - All the saran that I have tried from Retrodolls has been similar to DH and restoredoll saran. Still difficult to curl like all saran but lays flat beautifully. The tinsel saran has a little bit different texture but I believe that is the tinsel in the hair.
Thermal Saran - feels the same as above.
Thermal Pilot - feels the same as saran. Maybe a tad more silky.
Kankelon - The Kankelon sold at retrodolls US is very similar to DH Kankelon which is doll grade Kankelon. It is gorgeous and shiny when left straight but curling it is difficult.  Shannon at retrodolls US also use to have coarser Kankelon for making dreads.

I have worked with other hair types as well and am always happy to help with hair advice. Some people do not like to mix their types of hair and some don't mind - I do many fancy updos and find that mixing them generally doesn't matter when doing this - it does however matter when you are doing curls :)

Is it possible to have a thread of just the hair types offered from the different suppliers with how they act and all like JoshsPonyPrincess' post? I think that would be a helpful sticky for those like me that haven't worked with anything else thank Dollyhair's nylon.

Jwalraven - you can call me JPP - that is a fabulous idea - we will have to ask a mod if that would be allowed :)

if JPP wants to make a thread or a journal or what not, containing her reviews of all the different hair suppliers product, we could add a link to it in the sticky we have about customizing supplies

I have supplies of glow in the dark and UV changing hair, both are polypropylene (according to the provider) but I can feel a strong difference between them.

The GitD hair is VERY soft, I could keep it in my hands all day, I love the texture! I haven't used it myself yet so I don't know if it curls well or anything.
The UV hair is very delicate and very sensitive to combing. I think that's why all of our sunshine ponies' UV hair turned frizzy. Nothing to do with water or bad hair care, just too much combing! However, I think it's quite amazing to be able to have UV hair and it changes VERY quickly. As soon as I recieved my first spool, I took it out and the color changed immediately ^^

I'm still working on getting these more available, for the moment only mylittlecustoms carries it :)

I have some of Malancaiwen's UV too and I agree with her about the sensitivity to combing - it will tangle easily on you if you comb too ferverently. Will work on a page today with all the hair types including DH's and any other hair I have used which is readily available for customizers :)

Here is a link to the newly created FAQ Hair Types thread - if a mod would be so kind to sticky it that would be awesome :)

Next time I get in a spool of UV hair (my storage is not at my house, not enough place ^^") I'll try to see if conditionning or other products can soften the problem.

I ordered some of the UV Blond to pink hair that Dolly Hair had just gotten in in oct/nov but seems to be gone now(cant find it anyway), its definitively different from Malancaiwens UV hair. While Malancaiwen's is close to Saran, Dolly hairs UV is similar to dollyhairs polypropylene...very strong, resilient hair.
