I have a newerish Brother that I adore and an ancient Singer that was wired to be an electric machine. I mostly use my Brother though. I think it was less than $200. I've just taken good care of it. Last year I bought a portable Janome from Hancock. It was $50 and worked pretty awesome for the time I needed it.

I have some sort of Brother... I'll check it out later! Don't know how much it was, because I got it for Christmas a few years ago.

eeh I'm not very good with sewing machines, when it comes to dolls I prefer to sew them by hand but maybe a Singer mahcine will do? I'm getting an oldish Singer soon, hopefully I can send a review <3

my mother had an old  Neumann which worked fine for her, she sew my sister and me countless lovely clothes and things. but as it got old it started to break down more and more often - the last time I used it was 3 years ago, and it didn't sew properly - and a repair by an expert would cost so much we could actually get another one that works and is capable of doing everything this one can, so we never took it to the service station). I already thought of buying a new one instead, but now my father claims it's working fine, it just needed some settings, so I will get it soon - ehm, hopefully soon. it's been promised for months now -_- (I just can't go and bring it with me as it's too heavy, we need father's car, but he's not too busy to be available for a transfer, hence the delay). I really hope it's working as he said, but I am still thinking of buing a new one once I have the money for it. even if it works now I remember how often it started to act silly, and also it isn't the most handy thing to work with, I have some features I'd love to have on a sewing machine which this one doesn't have. so I'll keep an eye on this thread for some useful info - you already gave a few, thanks! :)

EDIT: the machine's here with me since, and so far it's been working fine. maybe it was only bad care that made it misbehave. now I re-checked, re-adjusted and oiled everything before using it, and my first attempts to use it were successful ^^

My parents got me a Brother LX2500 for Christmas. I don't really know how to use it very well, but it seems like a good machine, it's not too big or heavy, and I think it was only about 70 bucks? Good luck, I hope you're able to make some cool stuff!

I have a Singer Confidence that I've had for about 2 years. I think I paid $125 on sale. I also have a vintage Singer 500A. If you don't want to spend a lot of money at first I would suggest looking in thrift stores and craig's list. I see quite a few sewing machines at thrift stores for cheap.
