my mother had an old Neumann which worked fine for her, she sew my sister and me countless lovely clothes and things. but as it got old it started to break down more and more often - the last time I used it was 3 years ago, and it didn't sew properly - and a repair by an expert would cost so much we could actually get another one that works and is capable of doing everything this one can, so we never took it to the service station). I already thought of buying a new one instead, but now my father claims it's working fine, it just needed some settings, so I will get it soon - ehm, hopefully soon. it's been promised for months now
(I just can't go and bring it with me as it's too heavy, we need father's car, but he's not too busy to be available for a transfer, hence the delay). I really hope it's working as he said, but I am still thinking of buing a new one once I have the money for it. even if it works now I remember how often it started to act silly, and also it isn't the most handy thing to work with, I have some features I'd love to have on a sewing machine which this one doesn't have. so I'll keep an eye on this thread for some useful info - you already gave a few, thanks!
EDIT: the machine's here with me since, and so far it's been working fine. maybe it was only bad care that made it misbehave. now I re-checked, re-adjusted and oiled everything before using it, and my first attempts to use it were successful ^^
