Glueing pony body parts? (help needed)
« on: December 23, 2012, 04:49:26 AM »
Hello everyone.

Before I move onto the main issue a small backstory is required. Here it goes: I recently got hold of a small batch of G1 ponies, one of which was Sprinkles. Since she was in a rather not-so-good condition (her mane and tail were really frizzy, she had a rust stains at the root of her tail and you can hear that significant rattling noise when shaking her body), I decided to give her a nice bath.

However I couldn't really proceede any further since her head's still glued to her body, so I decided to dunk her a couple times in boiling-hot water (ugh... I really, really, really hate this process of taking ponies' heads off, since it's so tedious and time-consuming... but what can you do?  -_-).

After a few such "baths" I decided to try removing her head "mechanically", by which I mean trying to pry the glued parts. At first I used bluntly-ended object, then I moved on  to sharper objects. More specifically the exacto knife.

At first I was doing good but then I moved a little too far making a small cut into the inside of Sprinkle's neck. The cut looks like this:

Now my question is: is there something that can be done with it, that is, if there's a way to somehow "fix this" ? I was thinking about applying some glue into it, but I'm not sure if it's that good of an idea.

I'm asking because I'm quite concerned that this line will continue to grow bigger eventually becoming more and more visible on Sprinkle's body... I know it's a pretty silly concerne but still, I wouldn't want to damage her even more... especially that I really don't have enough resources to get another one elsewhere. :(

I'd very much appreciate any comments/suggestions/tips/advice on the matter.

If it were me, I would use use super glue on the cut.  I have no idea how that may affect the vinyl over time though.

I know a lot of people use Aleen's Tacky Glue to glue their heads back on when they won't stay in place, maybe that would work?

Super Glue should be fine, a lot of people use it to glue heads back on for customs.

I use model glue - doesnt have to be the super expensive stuff but reasonable quality.

I may be having an oblivious moment [not my first :P] but when her neck is glued back in place will that not cover this area and make it invisible on the surface?

Thanks for the tips, you guys! :) Once I get some enough time to spare I should try using it.

@hathorcat: I don't actually want to glue the head back - I never do that to my ponies. Once I remove their heads to clean them up, I prefer to leave them "detachable" just in case I have to go back and do some additional cleaning.

Also, since it's the topic about gluing, I'd like to ask another question. What's the best type of glue to use to keep the pony's hair in place? I'm asking since I got thie CP Bowtie at a second hand store, and once I started cleaning her I noticed that the glue that used to keep her mane in place has tried out and weakened over the years and also she's missing a few plugs of hair... :P

Hot glue will work or fabri-tac. Don't use glues like superglue for the inside of the hair line as it can seep through the hair and show up where you don't want it

If you are not intending to glue her head back on, I wouldn't bother reglueing the cut then to be honest. Adding glue into the plastic is just as potentially problem causing as leaving the plastic open - personally if you dont intend to seal her up I would leave it and if you are worried just monitor. I thought you were planning to glue her head back anyway, apologies for the wrong assumption. :)
