How do you start a CAM reroot
« on: December 16, 2012, 09:07:55 PM »
Though technically it's not a reroot since it never had hair to begin with, but I am just not sure how you start deciding where the hair line should go, plus how do you make the holes? Do you just shove the reroot tool into the head with hair and kinda "sew" it into the scalp making holes with the tool? I just don't know.
Also what do you do with the hole in the head? Do you fill it with some sort of stuff and fill it with hair?

first of all, o_o do NOT shove the re-root tool in first, you might break a lot of needles doing that. :p id suggest getting a needle, slightly bigger then the needle in the tool, make your hole with that first and pull it out right before your about to put the hair in, the plastic will shrink quickly.

im not sure what to do with the hard back side of the cam heads, as i havent rooted one yet, you could try rooting around it, if you plan on keeping the hair long and thick enough it might cover it pretty easy, otherwise I hope someone else can help you there.

as for the hair line, you could use one of the wigs as a template perhaps, some of the wigs iv found have a pretty high hairline, for instance my witch/cat wig is just weird, but my skeleton wig is great. or you could just look at your other dolls if you have any and get an idea from them. you might want to sketch out with a pencil or something that can be washed off easy without staining your dolls head.

im not expert, and these are just a few things i planned on trying when i customize my first cam, so maybe they will help you as well. im sure people with more experience will comment soon :D

Those are great suggestions truevamp! Thank you, I didn't think about looking at other dolls for reference, the only things I've rerooted were ponies and that was years ago.

Are you going to use the reroot tool or the knot and thread method?

I have heard of people replacing the hard caps in the CAM heads.

Ravie is an expert rerooter when it comes to CAMs.

I was going to use the reroot tool, though I need to buy another one cuz I think mine took a walk. I don't like the knot and thread as it drives me crazy. I was just poke poke poke and then glue glue glue lol.

OH another question is- How do you make specific hair go in a specific direction like bangs and parts? Cuz when I look at the rerooted dolls and some ponies there seems to be a directional manner to those hairs.

I know that with ponies (haven't yet done a doll), it's pretty easy to style if you work with slightly wet hair. You just lay it as you go. That's what I've always done, since I'm picky and always prefer my hair on the NDS.

I boil some water. Pour over hair laid the way I want it, then immediately run it under cold water to set it.
