Smokey Ponies - HELP??
« on: December 03, 2012, 05:04:44 PM »
I recently received a care package from my sister in law. Ponies galore! As thankful as I am, they downfall is that a bundle of them (G1s and G3s) smell very strongly of cigarette smoke. I am a non-smoker, so this is not something that I would overlook in anything I wish to keep, sell, or gift.

Does anyone have a tried and true solution for getting rid of that smokey smell? My guess is that these gals have been around it for quite some time!

Thanks, y'all!

One thing that seems to work really well is putting the ponies in like a tupperware bowl with baking soda and leave them for like a week. That has helped some of mine or you could always use Kitty Litter. If you like Coffee (not sure if that would leave stains might want to put them in another bowl inside a bigger bowl with that) it absorbs smells. Airing them outside will help a lot.

One thing I do that will make everyone else cringe is I get a big thing of hot water and put in the recommended small amount of bleach. It seems to kill some of really quickly for my ponies. Again I know that can turn out badly or freak others out, but eh ponies gonna be clean and non smelly in my house.

I'll second the recommendation of putting ponies in a sealed container of baking soda.  I had got some things that I thought would stink forever but this did the trick and got rid of the smell.

I third the baking soda/ kitty litter plan. I've done it a few times now and I think I left them for like a week like that, making sure they're 100% covered. I put both baking soda and kitty litter in with them to make sure it worked, but I don't think both were necessary.

If you do this, just be aware that they will be dusty after and a gentle washing is probably a good idea, where you can use scented soaps and such to get rid of any leftover smells too.

eewwwww!!! Stinky, smokey ponies! Truly gag worthy!  I once had one turn up that stank so bad that even the residue stink from the envelope she came in gave the room an adverse aroma!

I support what the others said (in theory). My pony fortunately was fixed up with a thorough wash and a good airing, but I've heard that the baking soda/kitty litter are tried and true methods  :)  I think I've even heard that drawer liners can be used? Maybe someone else has heard that and can clarify  :)

Good luck with your ponies!

Yup - these are awesome options. Kitty litter absorbs and baking soda neutralises personally I have had the most success with baking soda. However, what also works very well is to intersperse the periods that the pony is in with baking soda with time in the open area. Literally week 1 with baking soda, week 2 fresh open air, week 3 with baking soda - and repeat until the smell is gone.

Thanks, guys!

With wood furniture, I've used white vinegar, as well as baking soda and coffee grounds.

I've got my faves sealed up in Baking Soda, so I guess it'll just be a matter of tiem until their sweet-smelling enough to display!

Thanks, again.   :)

Dryer sheets!! omg... duh! That's what I meant before when I said drawer liners!

Honestly, I don't even know what a dryer sheet is - just heard of it re getting rid of smoke smell.  Goes off to imagine ponies rolled up in lavender scented drawer liners....  At least they'd smell nice!  :P

The only thing with dryer sheets is put them inside a pony or make sure they are not pressing against the outside of the pony...I have and do use them myself but I remember a thread once with people commenting that they had actually stained a pony because of what is contained within the sheet.

I had a very smoky Masquerade, she stank!  Ugh.  I put her in a bucket (so she wouldn't blow away) and left her outside for two weeks.  The smoke smell disappeared completely.

I leave mine in a ziplock bag completely covered in kitty litter for several weeks (just to make sure) then bathe them of course ;)
ponies 1-2 great!, pony 3 still very faint smell for a while, but airing out helps
I'm on ponies 4-7 now

I think I'll try the dryer sheets on a bait pony! I got suckered into the most expensive dryer sheets on the market - Arm and Hammer Moist Dryer Sheet. I LOVE them, and would love it if my ponies smelled just like them....instead of old musty cigarettes.
