airbrushes/compressors/etc
« on: December 08, 2012, 07:27:20 PM »
my husband wants to get me an airbrush and all parts necessary to do customs.  he asked me to add to my amazon wishlist what I wanted, aaaaand... I have no idea what to ask for.

can you guys point me in the direction of what I should be looking at?  there were a lot of options, and it was a little overwhelming!  amazon links would be most helpful!

same thing would apply to sculpting materials and all things related to that as well!

thank you in advance!

A lot of people have success with Paasche and Iwata brushes.  Airbrushing is tricky to learn at first, and a quality brush will help minimize frustration.  Most artists recommend a double action airbrush.  I adore my paasche.

Compressors are similar.  I tried to go get a cheap basic air compressor from Walmart.  They pressure was too high and hard to control.  I took it back, saved my money up and got an iwata double chamber compressor.  It allows me to control the psi (for ponies I prefer 15-30 psi).

Sculpting I would recommend apoxie sculpt anyday.  They sell it on eBay, or their website, www.aves.com.  It's a tad bit pricier than other clays, but it air dries and is wonderfully rock hard when it dries.  It's a two part clay that I adore.

Also remember to get a REGULATOR/moisture trap. It will save you so much frustration. I am of the opinion that the name on the compressor does not matter, though I do prefer the pancake one with the tanks. Or just one WITH a tank. It makes it easier to control moisture. I'm using one I borrowed from a friend he got from Harbor Freight. Paired with the regulator trap---works perfect. Love it. I use it for my large paintings too!! I have had the $250 air compressors. These work the same (if not better some times to be honest) and they are around $60-$100 (even less on sale!)

I'm a big Badger and Paasche fan for airbrushes, Double action :)

I've got one of the cheap airbrush/compressor sets from Harbor Freight.  It's a dual-action airbrush, and good enough to do full repaints and gradient work.  I'll eventually upgrade, but for $75 for the kit when it was on sale, it's a great start.
