Nylon vs Saran
« on: November 25, 2012, 07:32:19 AM »
Okay I finally know what colours I want to order, but I was looking in Nylon! So apparently Saran is the type to use to MH doll hair. What's the difference between the two? Is there a particular reason WHY saran must be used? Or is it simply to try and keep to the factory look?

Also, which is easier to style? Nylon or saran? As I plan to make a series of wigs for this custom.

Saran drapes better; it has thinner fibers and is much heavier and smoother/sleeker like "real" hair. I also think it's slightly more durable and holds up to repeated brushing without drying out or getting split ends like nylon, which explains why you see it in a lot of playline dolls. HOWEVER, it is much more difficult to style and curl.

If you're making a custom for yourself versus a doll for children's play, I would actually recommend nylon hair instead. It comes in a lot more bright colours and keeps its shape much better!

I like Nylon, it's easier to style (in my opinion) and my first full head rehair is involving Nylon. Although saying that, it's having the time to do more, I spent 4 hours on Friday evening doing rehairs, and realised I only did 40 plugs -.-

Saran is heavier, and it has a bit of an oily feel to it. It lays beautifully, though, and is more durable than nylon is. There are less colors, and it is often duller. Nylon is brighter in color, and is lighter than saran. It styles much easier, however, it can get frizzy if brushed too often. For reference, nylon is what is used on Bratz/Bratzillaz.

it's helpful to know which dolls have nylon, thanks for that :)  do Moxies have nylon hair too?

I know I prefer the saran for the dolls, because it's smoother and sleeker, HOWEVER I mix the two in my MH rehairs, and they work out well together, so if you like some colors more than others feel free to mix them.
I don't know any dolls with nylon, but all MLPs have it.
