Wow, I don't know why nobody has posted here yet.. but I can help you out a little!

Do you have a specific design in mind for your custom?
Do you want to give your doll new hair? If so.. What kind of hair would you like to use? (should it feel soft like Spectra's or slick and easy to style like MLP hair?)

If you want to repaint your doll's face, you'll need Acetone and cotton-pads + Q-tips to wipe of the factory paint, and afterwards you have to use a sort of primer on the face for the paint to stick to it better (I heard that most people like to use 'Mr.Super Clear' as both, a primer and sealant between each layer of paint and after finishing), and acrylics/pastels/watercolour pencils to give her a new paintjob.. the type of media depends on the face you want your doll to have. If it should look more like their factory paintjobs, use acrylics.. if you want a softer, dolly, look, use pencils and pastels.

Anyways.. this is just a general guideline and also a BUMP so that hopefully more people will see this post.

Feel free to post more specific questions or more info about your custom and I'll try my best to help!

Kim already said very much good things, but maybe i could add something. ^^

i know couple of customizers who sketch various designs of thier idea until setteling for one and realizing it. and from my own experience, i can say it really helps. ^^ doesn´t matter if you´re bad at drawing. cropping out of pictures work out for me too. ;)

edit:
could this maybe help? i simply traced the lines of the cam i have:

People have definitely given some great advice here!

Another thing you'll want to think about is whether or not you want to customize a CAM doll or a regular doll. CAM dolls can be taken apart very easily, so you can swap their body parts with other CAM dolls. Regular dolls, not so much. It would be much more difficult to, for example, remove a regular dolls' legs.

If you're planning on giving your doll new hair, it's also relevant which doll you choose. CAM dolls are completely bald and come with wigs. They tend to have hard heads, unless you're lucky enough to find one with a soft head. This means that you'll probably want to make a wig for them. (Or even many wigs!)

Regular dolls have soft heads that already have hair rooted in. They can also be given wigs, but alternatively you could reroot them. This basically means that you take their head off, rip out all of their factory hair, and then put new hair in. You have to fill every single hole in your doll's head with hair. It's a lot of work, but the results are awesome! If you're looking to reroot a doll, you will want to do that BEFORE you paint the face, or else you may mess up the doll's new face. You may also want to get a reroot tool, as they can help make rerooting much easier and faster.

There are lots of tutorials on how to make wigs and how to reroot dolls online. Youtube is especially helpful, since you can see the entire process. :)

I hope that helps a bit. Do ask if you have any other questions, and good luck! ^^

oh, and if youareabout to paint the dolls face, i recomment trying it before on paper, the excaact same eyes as you wanted to paint them later.

I'm guessing you have brushes already? :) Sounds like a pretty good list otherwise.

As for dying wigs, it depends mostly on the type of hair. Some types of hair take dye really well, others don't. What kind of wigs were you thinking of buying?
