I Just Don't Know What Went Wrong!
« on: November 03, 2012, 02:18:44 AM »
I made a custom pony of one of the background ponies from the FiM show, painted her and rooted in the mane and tail...

Then when I put her head on, This Happened!!!      :whoa:

Some of her paint cracked right off! That's never happened with my customs before. I was using a new brand of acrylic paint called Crafter's that I hadn't tried before. I've mostly been using Anita's Craft Acrylic in the past and had no problems.

I repainted her where the paint had cracked, so she's gray again now, but it doesn't look like a great paint job.   :cloud:

The problem is, I can't find Anita's Craft Acrylic paint in the UK anymore, and I won't be using Crafter's again for ponies.

Can anyone suggest an alternative paint that works well for ponies that is available in the UK or is cheap to order from somewhere in the US?

do you seal your paint at all?
ive found that the FIM ponies seam to repell the paint  ,   whipeing the entier body with acetone before painting can help, but results vary form pony to pony.

I've had good results with Citadel brand paints by Games Workshop. They are a bit pricy (almost $4 for 12mL), but they are meant to be used on miniatures so they work well on plastic. I feel that they are fairly high in pigment too.

Most craft stores don't carry them however, you would need to go to a hobby or gaming/comic store. I pick them up at my local comic book shop in with their metal miniatures.

Well, I won't be using Crafter's! Thanks for letting us know.

I recommend sealing if you don't. The paint tends to come off the G4s rather easily if it isn't sealed.

Like everyone else has stated, I would suggest sealing if you don't. I also suggest that with the G4s cut at least two notches in the head's neckring  as it will make it easier to put it back onto the plug for the pony.

I use Createx Airbrush paints on ponies and have not had any problems (except for the stress created when getting G4 heads back on without doing something to make it easier to get said head on, same goes for any pony with harder plastic... and that's with any paint I've used)

I second the Citadel Colours from Games Workshop!  They cover EXTREMELY well, and I've never, ever had issues where they haven't "behaved" under any condition.

I'm not sure what brands are over in the UK, but I'm kind of in the same boat as you, as my favorite brand of craft store acrylics was Apple Barrel (super cheap and always went on smoothly) but I haven't been able to find them for the past six months or so :(  I, personally, do not like Folk Art brand, as I find it too thick for my preferences to use on ponies (if I'm not custom mixing a color, I will just shake a bottle of acrylics, take the lid completely off and use the paint on the top of the lid on my brushes.  Fewer surfaces to clean up afterwards, that way!).  I've been slowly "replacing" my Apple Barrels as needed with Americana brand, which is okay, but I'm still getting used to using them - it seems that every company has slightly different formulas that have different consistencies.  I know I'll be able to adapt, but it's no fun needing to!

this happend to me too when i was putting one of my ponies heads back on! i had already sealed her so it didnt crack off but was trying to peel off. i pushed the color back down sealed the cracks and she is under a no touch order in my house!.... im not sure why G4's do this but i  was horrified! im so sorry this happend to you too, i thought it was just a fluke when it happend to me.
