Hair styling advice required please!
« on: October 24, 2012, 04:30:06 AM »
Hi guys.

I'm very aware that my biggest failing when it comes to customising is, what to do with the hair. Most of my customs just end up with the long-and-straight, no frills hair - rather like my own *g*

This time though, I need some help.

I'm going to be making a Japanese themed custom, and I would dearly like the pony to have hair in *some sort* of Japanese looking style, but I don't have the faintest idea where to start with it.

If anyone could give me a few ideas of things I could do, and more importantly, HOW I would do them, I'd be most appreciative ^^

Cheers chaps.
Thank you *wyvernchick* for my lovely avvie!

For a general idea of what might look good, might I suggest looking over the kimono ponies that LLL has made in the past? http://lovelauraland.deviantart.com/gallery/  Her kimono ponies all look really beautiful, and she manages to do their hair up nicely. Its simple styles with the correct ornaments.

LLL does make stunning kimono ponies indeed! For more ideas you could see

And JPP is the queen of hairstyles, see e.g. Hana Mika and Pretty Paisley.

I have also made a couple: Hakumei, Natsuko, Umiko.

Generally I think a bun + embellishments always works if you're going for an elegant geisha inspired style. If you're looking for a more contemporary Japanese style, a fringe, maybe longer sides... some Google research will surely help you find inspiration.

There's a tutorial for a bun in the stickied tutorial topic. It's very simple actually: grab the hair, twist until it starts to curl into the bun shape by itself, secure with pins and/or sew it into place. For pulled back bangs you need to poke some new plugholes to create a new hairline; same goes for flat bangs - I use a clothes iron to set the hair and make it keep its shape.

Hope this helps you to get started! If you find a specific hairstyle that you'd like to try, I'm sure someone will be able to assist you on how to go about it. ^^

Thanks very much for those! It is something similar to the 'Pretty Paisley' pony I was hoping to try - rolled into a bun, and then pinned. I bought some awesome cloisonne bead today in black and white that I might use to do the pinning.

I shall have a rummage through the tutorials and see what I need to do next. Thanks again!
