I honestly believe that you are never outbid by 'just a few cents'. I don't think anyone would place a bid that was the minimum allowed higher price than the earlier bid - people generally bid in rounded numbers, like 20, 25 or 30. It's always eBay's automated bid for them, so they were always willing to pay much more.
I was sniped once after I had watched the timer count down to just 1 second left. I really thought I'd won until I refreshed the page, to see that someone outbid me with less than a second to go. I wasn't mad, I was just impressed! That person either had nerves of steel or a high quality sniping program. I learnt my lesson from that about putting in my max bid, rather than manually bidding.
