Selling jewelry?
« on: October 16, 2012, 07:36:32 AM »
So, I've got some old jewelry I'd like to sell. One is my old wedding ring/engagement ring set (white gold, diamonds, opal, no paperwork), the other is an Aurora Borealis Tanzinite in Black Hills gold that I've never worn...and still have the original register tape for.

But how do I find someplace to take it to to sell it? I know those Cash 4 Gold sites are pure trash, I'm looking to go to an actual jeweler.

I'm really not sure how you'd go about it. I've never really sold jewelry.

I had to have my wedding rings re-sized once. That was kind of weird, leaving something that important with someone you don't know o.o

i would suggest going to an auctioneers rather than a jewelers (it depends on the jeweler though!) the auctioneers may well have a specialist jewelery auction which they can put your item in or reccomend you an specialist autioners. you will get a better price from an auction than a jewelers IMHO.

also auctioneers will have a gemologist who will test the stones and the will also test the metal of the rings for you before they sell them so it doesn't matter if you don't have papers for them.

i think it is important for you to have a shop about and find a place you are comfortable with before you sell.

What PKW said ... also research your local jewelers.  Don't be afraid to shop around.

Hey Rainsong!  I work in jewelry, and might be able to help.  Do you have any of the original paperwork on your engagement ring or an appraisal?  Most retail or chain jewelers can't buy used jewelry because they are not licensed to sell Estate pieces.  Your best bet is to try to sell it on your own (eBay, Craigslist, etc) or find a place that will consign it for you.  With Craigslist, please make sure you meet at a well traveled location, not your house!

I suggest taking your set to a jeweler to have them inspect the piece for any needed repairs and a cleaning.  Unfortunately, reselling diamonds is difficult because most women only want "new".  You can typically expect to get 1/3-1/2 of what you originally paid for the set:(.  Pawn shops will give you even less.  Cash for gold places will pay only gold scrap value (roughly $25-30 per gram for 14K) and will either remove the gemstones or crush them.  It's not worth selling to these places unless you desperately need the money.

PM me and I can try to help you as best I can:)

The engagement/wedding set has no paperwork at all. I don't even know what the original cost was, or if the stones are genuine - they were given to my husband by a friend. I planned to get an appraisal done, but I've no idea where to get that done, either.

I'll probably PM you later - I'm off to catch a nap here in a few.

Thank you, everyone!
