Odd problem with Dullcote
« on: October 04, 2012, 01:24:36 PM »
I've not had a problem with Dullcote before and I didn't seem to have a problem with the newer formula they have, till I tried to seal this one pony... Note she was originally sealed with the old formula of Dullcote.

What I normally do is spay the base fbr with dullcote then do the eyes then spray again with the dullcote (after the 24 hour period in each case of course) before I add Triple Thick to the eyes... Well when I did it this time I noticed some what looked like a webbing/vainning effect on some of the areas of paint that was sealed with the older stuff... At first I thought it might have been a dust problem but when rubbed my finger in one area... the paint was getting... how should I say this... kind of pulled/rolled I guess... It's hard to describe really

It showed up in about 3 different areas on the pony and only 3 for some odd reason... The tip of one ear, which seems to have I guess corrected itself as I don't see the vainning any more. Between the two ears, which is where I testes to see what the heck was wrong because I knew that could be covered with hair. And around one of the eyes. Oh and now that I look again seems the tip of the other ear has it... but not as bad.

I haven't the foggiest of what went wrong as it didn't seem to do that with the rest of the head... I'm hoping it's not a real serious issue though as I don't think I have that same color of blue any more x.x

I would should pics but it would be too hard to see

So the paint colors were webbing/bleeding out of the painted areas?

Well not bubbling, almost lick a crackle effect, but kind of very fine in look... I think she is going to be ok, though I'm hoping there won't be a problem with the paint when I rehair.

How unusual.  What brand of paint did you use for the eyes and base coat?

I can't remember the brand for the base, it was actually a mix. The eyes themselves were mostly Createx with a mix for the eye color itself. The New Dullcote didn't affect the eyes but only affected certain areas of the base FBR but not the whole FBR oddly enough... it might have reacted to something else but not sure what :/

I think I recall my friend Brantwijn having this problem recently. But I can't remember what sealer she used, and I think the paint was ceramcoat. I'll have to poke her and point out this thread.

I do know one thing, the paint I used wasn't craft paint like Ceramcoat XD It was a mix of Artist acrylics but it wasn't createx... or at least 100% createx I'm sure there is createx in there somewhere.

I do want to see that thread though when you find it :)

It could be a number of things, it could have been oils from your hands that the new formula had an issue with or it could be that for what ever reason you might have sprayed a bit more in that area so it reacted.  I know several model folks have had issue with the new formula so it could just be it, not playing nice.

Yeah I was thinking it might have been hand oils... but I bet it's just the formula not playing nice... I'll have to take more notice when doing customs and figure out the possible reasons

It's a fairly unusual reaction so it may be hard to narrow down other factors (pony plastic issues, a "poor" batch of paint, temperature, humidity, etc.)  I would be curious to know if it happens again!

Well I was considering giving this pony a new FBR after the paint chipped at the hairline due to the other needle I use with my rehair tool

and if she is chipping that easily then I have a problem
