HELP! I can NOT deal with pony hair...
« on: October 15, 2012, 10:20:47 PM »
So I've started out on a custom. She's fully painted and otherwise ready to go, and it's time to rehair her. I bought a blend hank of hair from DollyHair, everything is set. Problem? I cannot handle this stuff for the life of me! It's disgusting to work with, tangles almost immediately and won't stay wet long enough!

I'm at my wit's end- I would like to hire someone to rehair my pony for me. I have the hank ready, I just cannot do this. I can't. It raises my blood pressure just thinking about working with it. Not to mention, my bald pony's head is still full of her old hair on the inside, and I can't get it out :(

I hope I can find someone for a reasonable price :( I checked the commission artist page, but it's hard to tell who is open and who isn't, since those entries are sometimes months and months old. Thus, if you would be interested in rehairing my otherwise beautiful custom, please let me know how much you would charge (in a PM).

And if this post isn't allowed, I'm sorry :( I didn't know where else it would go.

Thanks!
Will always trade for limited edition/90s Pikachu stuff!

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that has problems with this. I pretty much ruined a hank because it just got tangled. :/

 I hope you can find someone to rehair your custom.

Out of curiosity, how do you guys start working with the hair? And is it nylon or some other hair type? Most of the problems I've had have been with some other hair than Dollyhair, like cheap wigs or hair extensions. Nylon usually behaves rather nicely, although some colours tangle more easily than others. I always grab the hair tightly in the middle and comb the ends first, then remove the tie and gently separate the amount I need, grabbing the middle again. At this point the ends get easily tangled though, so if I'm planning to use the whole hank I usually cut it in half before I start separating any of the hair. The shorter it is, the less likely it is to get tangled in the process.

Anyway, I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to offer rehair services, hope you find (or have already found) someone! ^^

Exactly what Griffin said, that's pretty much how I handle my hair as well, I haven't had any problems. I've always had problems though with the cheaper "wig" type of hair..almost 100% of the time too. Nylon is a little frizzy when it first comes out of the bag, but if you do a little static discharge first, no problems. It brushes well, styles well, washes and takes dye well. I have no experience with the other stuff out there, but I'm happy with the Nylon.

As for wetting it, I only wet right in the center of my hank where I'm going to gather it for the plug. It might be best to keep a little cup on hand with some extra water to put on it if it is drying too quickly. Then again, it's always around 70-71 in my house too. :D

I do mine a little differently and it works out quite nicely :3 I'll add this to my list of video tutorials that I'm planning on doing and maybe it will help some other customizers too! :3

Static is really the only issue I've run into with the DollyHair that I've used. For my rehairing process I take the hank outta the bag, run the hair through my hand to collect the static and calm it down. Then using most of my desk, I lay out the hank and cut off the section I'm going to work with. I've found that the hair when laid out on the desk like this seems to separate itself into plug sized groupings. Using something pointy I carefully pull the grouping away for me to pick it up without it grabbing onto other bits of hair.

Static is a pain, and I sometimes get tangley bits I give up on, but mostly that's when I'm working with something other than MLP nylon. I hope you've found someone anyway :)
