Paint not sticking?
« on: September 13, 2012, 12:25:25 AM »
Alright, so right now I'm working on two G4 customs, but I've run into an issue.
I've done one full body repaint before, and not have any issues, but these two are are my second and third body paint jobs, and in one area on each, paint will NOT stick... It's a different spot on each one. The paint will go on every other spot, but paint refuses to stay on these spots for some reason... Any solutions?

If you wiped off the eyes and symbol with acetone, you need to rinse the surface well before you go to paint. C: I've had that happen to me before.

Yeah, I did- but the parts where the paint sticking aren't even close the where the cutie mark or eyes were. :/

Yeah same when it happened to me it turns out there was just a spot where acetone had dried on it's own, not even near where it was wiped from.

If it's not that, maybe it had a small oily spot or something? :V

I have had this happen too. I find that if I just ignore it, eventually it gets paint on it.. Paint a coat, let it dry. Paint another coat, dab some lightly on the spot, let it dry. Slowly, the spot gets enough to stick to it to hold more. It may take a while longer, but eventually it will hold up.

Alternately you might try a sponge instead, but if yours are anything like mine, its on the insides of the legs, and getting in there is hard enough with a paint brush let alone a sponge.

Edited to add: For mine, there was no oil or acetone. I thought there was, but I washed and dried it thoroughly a few times. It's just the plastic.

That's so odd that the plastic would react like that, though. What were you using as a base when it happened to you, Maniah?

Yeah come to think of it, that happened to me on a pinkie and RD as well!

Must be something in the plastic they use, or maybe the color has something to do with it, because white/yellow ponies have never given me issue.

Now that you mention it, both ponies I'm trying to paint are Pinkie Pies... Hm.

Anyhoo, I still can't get any of it to stick. Nearly the whole bodies have completely taken to the paint, save for the very visible "bald" spots. >_>

I'm still trying to just lightly dab on paint to cover the section, but... Meh, guess I'll give it more time.

Yeah just wait a bit between coats. Eventually it'll build up enough. c:

You might try to lightly run some smoother grit sandpaper over those areas to give the paint something to grab.

Yep, I would try sandpaper or a coat of primer. Hope you'll find something that works!

Thirding the sandpaper. For pony stuff I use a nail buffing block and use the roughest side, which is super fine but enough to give you some grip.

Yup, agreeing with the sandpaper suggestion.
