Sandman from Vertigo! It's been collected in trades, so it is easy to get. It's considered one of the best graphic novels ever written, and has a hugely expansive storyline. It's genre is fantasy and it was written by Neil Gaiman. Lots of different artists contributed, so the art is always giving you something new.

I'd also recommend "A Flight of Angels". It's a relatively new fantasy one-off that I quite liked.

I second the Sandman series :)

Hey I feel your pain - comic shops and anything 'out of the norm' is zippo where I live too. I tend to use a US-based comic shop (http://www.mycomicshop.com) apart from ebay - though I tend to only be focused on the Transformers series from IDW, so I can't add any other suggestions for you to try as material.

I would look for anything in a trade paperback or collected in volume form.

I'd say Fables would definitely fit your criteria. It's by Bill Willingham and it's about all the fairytale people eking out a life in New York after they had to flee their homeland.

For quality sci-fi, I enjoy Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis, which is an unspecified time in the future where things are very different, yet very similar, much like how our future's progressed.  It's about Spider Jerusalem, an investigative reporter in a very weird world.

For horror/fantasy, I'm gonna recommend a lot of the early BPRD/Hellboy stuff, since it's mostly separated enough you can get a feel for the characters easily. Mike Mignola's art is just beautiful, too. The BPRD stands for Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, and they go after a lot of folktale/mythological/urban legend type things, as well as original adventures and creatures. Hellboy is a member of the BPRD early on and his stuff is just great. He's not like the movies though, he's much less dramatic/immature.

Also the first Top Ten collection by Alan Moore. It's a city where *everyone* is a superhero, and it focuses on the tenth precinct (hence Top Ten) as they police the city.

I'm a little annoyed I have no recs by women, but all the ones I've read do superhero comics and have years of backstory. Everything I've recced is  self-contained, has very good collections out for them that you can check out.

Sandman is a definite.  I read mostly "human interest" type comics and graphic novels so I don't have too much to suggest.  Sorry!

As for fantasy, if you don't mind furry stuff, check out Blacksad.  It's darker in theme (noir-style) and has interesting story lines.
