Any expert hair dyers? Doing something drastic tomorrow..
« on: September 05, 2012, 09:46:16 PM »
Okay.. I've been feeling down lately and I decided I need to really do something to pick me up. I have long golden blonde hair. Goes down to the middle of my back. It's completely natural. I'm known for my long blonde hair and loading it with hair clips and flowers and what not. I want something different! I'm tired of being the naive blonde everyone walks all over. I know how to stand up to myself and seriously feel like people don't take me seriously lol I am obsessed with collecting red haired dolls and would LOVE to be a redhead myself. I've wanted this FOREVER. I don't want to be dark 'fake' looking red. More like a real red head! Here's a pic of my hair now:

and the shade I want is something close to Molly Quinn's hair:

Anyone have any tips on what kind of dye to use? I've heard using a strawberry blonde should add in the right colors to make the shade right. I just don't want extremely dark red hair. >.< If anyone can help me make my hair a beautiful natural looking red, I'd be super happy!

(I'm actually as pale skinned as her.. so I think I could really pull the look off! I have green eyes instead of blue though. And dark eyebrows =/)

To be perfectly honest, if you want the result to be perfect, consult a hairdresser and get their help instead of doing it yourself, just to be on the safe side. Getting the right shade of colour can be hard, it's all about what kind of pigments already is in your hair and understand what to use and how to use it. I have a perfect horror example: my own sister. She wanted to go from coloured black to ice blonde and did it at home. Since she has lots of red in her hair, it became everything from green to orange and when she finally caved in and went to a hairdresser it was too late to save the hair. She lost more than half her length and it took more than a year before she had the icey blonde she initially wanted. Going blonde is more extreme I admit, but just knowing what can go wrong and how long it takes to make it right again makes me shudder. I dye my hair at home, but I dye it black and black can never go wrong. Red, I've tried and I did it at the hairdresser everytime.

When it comes to dying your hair red, the best and only way to get the result you're looking for is to bring a picture of what you want your hair to look like to your hairdresser and let them do the job. Red is an extremely tricky colour to dye yourself (believe me, I've tried!) and a natural reddish colour is quite impossible to do yourself with regular hair dye.

I am a hairdresser, and I've fixed a lot of at home color over the last 12 years.  A LOT. So I'm going to 'third' the recommendation to go to a salon.  You have gorgeous blonde hair, I wouldn't risk ruining it at home!

I so wish I could follow your advice but the only place close to me is a beauty college and I know some girls that work there that I'd rather avoid at all costs.. Went to high school with them.  Any other closer places are wayyy to expensive. My mom has done lots and lots of hair dyes for people over the years so I'm trusting in her. If it turns out funky.. first I'll post pictures because it would be funny.. second.. I'd dye it the darkest brown I could get lol.

thanks though!

I have the same colour hair as you and I had it dyed into that gorgeous red :) Everyone thought it was my natural hair colour, but I did have it done at a professional hairdressers.

The good thing about our hair is that it takes colour pretty well, and usually what it says on the package is what you get. What I´d do if I were you and absolutely had to do it at home, I´d take a colour that looks most like what you want, and dye just one strand of hair - see how that turns out.

I go to this place called Floyd's and their dye jobs are excellent and are $50!  That's less than half of what I paid in CT. Do you have any of those around you?
