Last Christmas I got my first and only G3 fashion style pony Star Catcher. She is my favorite G3 and I was so happy to find her mint for only $20. Every time I tried to find her on e-bay she was so much more and not is the best condition.

I dont remember us getting a reason for the change but yes the Cheerilee thing was when the core 7 launched - at the same time Toola Roola completely changed as well. However, to be fair that was more that they "retired" the Cheerilee & Toola characters and then launched "new" characters who just so happened to have the same names as earlier ponies.
But then Rainbow Dash with a new voice is supposed to be the same character according to the clip show DVDs?  That's too confusing for me...

Hathor you have no IDEA how much I want that CC pony, I would literally sell one of my arms for one of those!  But yeah, I love the styling G3s, I have one of each and my starcatcher is currently undergoing de-colourchanging-goop treatment, it's hard but it'll be worth it! xx

Dashie, Rarity, Pinkie, Star Catcher and Cheerilee here.  Also a baity Dashie without hair waiting for a bigger rainbow and non-pastel hair and a Pinkie that is now bluish-green and just needs the rest of her hair.  If I remember right, I ordered 4 hanks to re-hair her and should have some extra.  Cleaned the basement and found 3.5 Pinkie I forgot we had.  Now I want Star Song to keep her company.

We are talking about the toys though not the show - Rainbow Dash didnt change in symbol or colour - she was clearly the "same character" - you have to differentiate between the toy line and the cartoon.

You know what I love? That there IS a toy line and cartoon! It was too many years without either! (cartoon)I didn't watch a whole lot of the g3 cartoon other than the ones that were released on dvd, so I didn't even realize they had changed her voice. When I heard it, I was a little confused- why get rid of the thing that made her special?
(toys) So where did I get this idea about the names? And on Kimono's Townhouse (online comic) there's a part where Minty calls Kimono's sister "Sakura," but she doesn't like that name, I assumed it was because of the horse meat thing. Oh, ponies! Will your mysteries never cease?
Thanks so much to Calico_Star for her beautiful work on my Avatar!

Yeah, but even beyond the cartoons and new looks, the Core Seven altered some returning ponies' hobbies: Pinkie Pie was suddenly a party planning expert, Rainbow Dash was all about clothes shopping and modeling, and Scootaloo became the sports 'n' games pony.  Though, did they ever really do anything with "riding rainbows" for Rainbow Dash in the first place?

In all the Core 7 was a big shake up - a lot of things changed. But honestly I was more talking about the toys and their colours and styles. Hasbro did say at the time that they were "retiring" the Cheerilee and Toola characters along with just about everyone else from G3 and then they whipped out core 7...I guess at the time the "retirement" was so they could re christen a couple of "new ponies" with earlier names.

Perhaps whether a character changed depends on what is more important to you about the line? If its the shows and the "characters" then yes there are certainly other differences which are relevant when Core 7 came about. However, if its just about the toys themselves without being influenced by the cartoon or the "characters", then the changes are largely, although not completely, limited to the couple mentioned.

Its a bit like into G4 - I dont consider G4 Pinkie a new toy - simply the G4 reincarnation of G3.5 Pinkie and likewise for Rainbow Dash - they are not "new characters" to me. However, if they had changed Dash's symbol and made her a different colour then even if her name was still Rainbow Dash she would be a "different" pony for me. I know that probably makes no sense but lol its all about personal perspective :)

I don't know, even without looking at the shows, to me, each line has different toys, even if they're technically the same, like Pinkie Pie and Apple Jack. The transition from G3 Core 7 to G3.5 is the only exception for me since nothing really changed except the style of the toys; it's still essentially Core 7, with all the same characters, plus just a few new ones like the "moms" or whatever that was about. Maybe I am just influenced by the shows and can't separate it from the toys, but that's just how I see it.

Cheerilee is odd to me, though, because there are so many versions of her, that you can actually watch the evolution from one character to another. And if Unicorn Cheerilee did originate in the cartoon, I find it kind of hard to really look at that separately. Toola-Roola to me came across as lazily reusing a name since I don't really see the transition, just some similarities.

As for the name Sakura, that just means Cherry Blossom and is a popular Japanese name. I seriously doubt that sounds like Chinese for "horse meat". Besides, they wouldn't even mention it if it were the reason they stopped using it. I'm sorry, it's just that that whole thing sounds too conveniently like a made-up rumor. Why would they even care what it sounds like in Chinese, especially if its a common name and not something made up? We've had plenty of names that don't even sound right in English!

Even G4 Rainbow Dash is too different for me: New lightning bolt shape in the symbol, new purple eye color, rainbow hair that follows the color wheel, new interest in flying... unless the RC airplane toy counts, heh.  But I can almost see G4 Pinkie Pie as an evolution, where they took some of the wilder things G3.5 Pinkie tried in her later years and turned them into her whole character.

Though it's interesting, looking at Friendship Is Magic, only the five ponies who were in the Core Seven have any resemblance to their previous selves.  (Further G1 updates might bear a resemblance, too, if they could get more.)  Other ponies who appear in the show with G3 names are complete re-imaginings, even if they were important, like Rarity and Fluttershy: All they have in common with the old Rarity and Fluttershy are a horn and a butterfly mark.

Found her as a "4 off" - or actually it was supposed to be 10 then it was 7 then it was 3 and then finally I found another one to round it up to 4 :)
