Drippy paint - Pearlising Mistake - Advice welcome
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:42:18 AM »
Hi everypony!

So I decided to take one of the 2 Gingerbread restores I've been working on and make her pearlised. I spent quite a long time touching up her symbols, cleaning her, touching up her eyeliner etc. She's Bald. Then I took her outside and used my crappy airbrush to all-over spray her with a coat of watered-down iridescent paint. This did, as I hoped, give her a lovely pearly coat, but it also dripped and formed big thick pearly blobs. :(

I tried to remove the blobs and fade out the removed sections so I could re-spray them, but of course it's really difficult to not overlap the new bits - which then causes some sections to have 3 layers of paint and some only 1 or 2, which means they look silly.

I literally can't remove the paint to start again without removing her symbols and I'm totally stuck as how to fix her.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

If it's watered-down, does that mean you could wash it off? I know acrylic paint is water-based; if that's what you're using, maybe a good scrub will get some of it off! Or maybe Magic Erasers?

I hope you can fix her!!

I had this happen to me, but I wasn't using watered down paint. I was using Createx airbrush paints. I was a little to liberal with the spraying, and it ran. In some spots I was able to sand away the bumps with a very fine grit sandpaper ( I cannot remember the grit) and then spray a faint coat over that area to revive the shine.

Same here. If you spray lightly enough around the edges it will blend in - I've done this before and it looked fine afterwards.

I am not an airbrushing expert, but I believe that paint runs because it is either sprayed too close to the pony or for too long in one spot, so a couple of quick light coats when the affected areas are sanded should do the trick! :)

As suggested, some ofthe highest grit (smoothest) sandpaper you can find might be the trick.

If you used acrylics, you can strip the whole thing and start over by removing it with rubbing alcohol. This will not affect the symbols since it is a different kind of paint. Rite aid carries alcohol wipes (like baby wipes) that come in really handy for this.
