I discovered this a few months ago, never posted a picture.

Anyway, the prototype dance n prance ponies all had different molds then released except two. One head position was actually never even made..

BUT check this out. I did research.. and I'm dying to get my hands on some of these and get someone to make customs for me.. but they are just too expensive on ebay for a knock off..

Look at Prototype Tap Dancer and Swinger

this leads me to believe that some fakie molds that are used were concepts of early models of g1 MLPs. Also, the rearing fakie baby (anyone have a pic?), I think it was a concept mold as well and whatever company took it changed the head and made it ugly.. but if you look at that fakie baby as well, it has MLP feet at the bottom (like the concaves)

It's certainly possible, but I have to admit I'm dubious. The head on that fakie is pretty close, but i don't think the body is long enough compared to the body of prototype TD and Swinger. The feet are very skinny too. It just doesn't look like the same mold to me.  It's a good thought, though; those prototype molds must go somewhere. Unless Hasbro destroyed them. I have no idea what a toy company like that would do with them, honestly.

Also, the fakie lover in me wants to say that fakie is adorable!! even though that doesn't contribute to the discussion. =P
I'll put something here some time

I don't think the rearing baby was a prototype mold, I think she is an example of Magic Star's mold shrunk down.

But that fakie certainly looks close to the prototype Dance ' n Prances.

I think the ponies in that catalogue are simply head and body mixes from earlier moulds...the body looks like the remoulded Swirly Whirly body and the head of the remoulded Tootsie/Cherries Jubilee pose. This is quite common in a lot of the catalogues when ponies are in poses and moulds they are never actually released in.

Its certainly more than possible the fakie is reverse engineered for the mould using a G1 body and head but I would guess them to be common ponies.

Yuck!

I'm kind of glad they did NOT make the DNP in Peg form!

Well the body is the same body as the unicorn body I think? With a downward molded head. I can't remember how swirly whirly looks in person, but maybe it's a simar pose? But I don't think it's the same.
I'm thinking that this pose was supposed to be made and top toys had it, and then maybe was told not to use it on there disco ponies ?? Lol I guess we never know

Does anyone have one of these fakies that can stand it next to one of there DNp ponies and take a picture???

Also, is it me or does tap dancer have freckles in the promo shoot? Hah

The unicorn pose on the Dance and Prance is almost identical to the unicorn pose used for Powder or Sky Flier - but the fakies rear legs look as though they have a gap between them the unicorn pose does not therefore its a little more similar to Swirly.

The prototypes in the pictures are not moulded plastic ponies made in a factory so there will not be a mould created for them that could have been passed on to a fakie or genuine licenser. If a mould existed then due to the money creating that would have cost, they would have been made in that mould when released. Its because its cheaper and easier to use existing moulds that we get prototype pics that are different from the actual ponies released. Marketing will create the glossy image and then production put a big cross through it saying "too expensive" and create something similar but not necessarily the same. The mould will never have got beyond the imagination of marketing and one or 2 prototype ponies.

So as close as they look I really think its more that the fakie is reversed from a released MLP rather than a prototype.  Argentina got Dance and Prance ponies so its always possible they simply reversed the body from the genuine release.
