WIP - First Custom
« on: August 26, 2012, 08:28:16 AM »
This is my first custom that I started about a week ago. I am looking for any tips or suggests you are willing to give me.  :)  Currently she is unnamed and I'm still trying to decide on what her cutie mark should be, and what color hair I would like to give her.

I used acrylic model paint to paint the body and head (not shown), and while it looks alright I definitely think that I might try to stick to using the original colors until I can get my hands on an airbrush.

Apoxie Sculpt was used for the clothes. The ruffles were a pain, but I'm pleased with how they turned out.

Next step is clean up and sanding!

It looks great for a first time!

I would point out however, that you probably want to wait to paint AFTER sculpting, for a few reasons.

One is that the clay is attached to the paint and not the pony. This probably won't be an issue because your sculpting encases your pony, so to speak. But if you had just stuck some on her side, it could peel off with the paint.

Two, you will find when you go to sand this, you will probably sand off a bit of your paint.

And Three, handling the pony for sculpting and sanding is going to result in a dirty looking pony. It isn't as easy to wash them when they are painted, as it is to do so before you paint.

That's it for tips and suggestions from me :)

Yeah, I had kinda figured that I should paint after sculpting. When I first started working on her, I hadn't planned on doing any sculpting. Oh well. I'll probably give her a fresh coat of paint when I'm finished sanding.

she is looking great so far -- you started really ambitious! (then again, I have been doing this for over 8 years, and sculpting and I still fight with eachother - lol)

can't wait to see her completed ^_^

Haha, yeah I know I was really jumping in. I have spent a few years painting miniatures for tabletop games and such, so I didn't think painting would be much of a challenge. I'm feeling good about the sanding I did last night, so if I have time tonight I'm going to start doing more painting on her.

I just placed an order for some hair from dollyhair.com.
This lovely pony is going to get some locks of Lucky Green. Because I liked the color and I decided on a lucky theme for her. :lovey:

Here is my paint job for the evening. I think I might attempt to repaint the second clover, and add something to the bodice.
