Quick TE or cabochons eye size Q..
« on: August 27, 2012, 12:34:30 PM »
I had gotten the wrong size because the darn Diva pose eyes are slightly more narrow. >.>

I have 14mm cabochons, which was too big. Should I go with 10-12mm or smaller...maybe 6mm for the cabochons? And what size for the actual crystals that are used for the TEs?

Did you measure the eye?

The sad part, is that I don't have any tools to measure it. That's why I'm asking. :(
That's okay though, I'll wing it....or I'll be painting as normal. :P

Thanks though!

Could you maybe take the head to the store and just compare crystal sizes until you get the right one?  That's what I'm going to have to do on my current TE project I think.

I work with cabochons a lot on my side jewelry business, I'd say 6-8mm would be the ball park range for what you need.  14mm is very large haha

and for twinkles, probably around the same. I bought a few different sizes of flatbacks a little while ago, I'll have to go fish out the packages to give you the sizes I have that would probably work.

I bought Swarovski ones and got the largest size flatbacks they do. They're still a little small for G1 Te's IMO. Works OK on G4 and G1 babies. think its like ss34? maybe? You can fill in gaps round the gems with clay which helps. If you're doing that better not to get flatbacks though 'cause they're hard to grip!

Alrighty! Perfect! I had ordered the 8mm cabochons by chance before you posted that, and you're right! The 8mm is the perfect size that I needed for my G3 Diva pose!

6mm- G1 babies
8mm- Both male and female G1s(I put them up to my loving families for comparisons). G3 Diva pose.
10mm- G3 poses (other than Diva)

I'll compare other ponies some other time. And here are some photo references for those whom do not know what a cabochon is:
"a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. The resulting form is usually a convex top with a flat bottom."

But what I have is just a clear glass. There are many options though.

Ahh, yeah I've used those for doll eyes. They'd probably look great inset, I know we have a custmizer who makes awesome ponies with inset glass eyes and lashes.
