Question About Homemade Fleece Clothes
« on: August 21, 2012, 08:21:47 AM »
I have a question concerning the pony safety of having ponies wear homemade fleece clothing.

I've heard several times throughout the entirety of this forum that ponies are extremely senstive- to the point that even clothes that are manufactured for the ponies will leave marks on the them or stain them with fabric dye.  One solution I've heard is to soak any clothing in vinegar for a short period of time.  Even then, I've heard that may not be full-proof, for the integrity of both the pony and the clothing.

I wanted to ask, more specifically, about how ponies respond to fleece fabric that you may purchase from someplace like Hancock Fabrics or Jo-Ann's.  Would it be advisable to soak any fleece fabric used for a custom pony costume in vinegar prior to dressing up your ponies?  Are there any other methods?  For any and all methods that you would suggest, do you consider them fairly safe and full-proof, or would you still advise against extended wear or caution me that there may still be a risk of a pony being stained?

Two final questions: First of all, I'm mostly talking about the playful ponies of G4, but I think that the same material is used to make pony bodies for both the playful and fashion style sets.  Secondly, are the PLASTIC accessories that ponies sometimes come with usually safe for them to wear, or do those tend to damage and/or stain ponies as well?

Sorry for all the questions, but thank you in advance!   :)

Any type of anything can stain any type of pony. I've gotten marks on my G1s from just cleaning them, and scratches on my G4s just from carrying them around.

Face it, no pony is less likely to be injured or stained by an accessory, or even anything than others. G1s are not perfect, nor are G4s.

This post doesn't help, does it?

The G4 plastic accessories will leave dents. The G1 plastic accessories (eg saddles and bridles) will stain and leave marks that look like pink highlighter. I play safe - none of my ponies have their accessories on, the few Ponywear sets I have out occasionally are modeled by bait ponies, just in case.

I keep accesories on my G4s cause I love how they look. May be bad in the future, but I don't care, I'm not gonna leave all my ponies naked just cause it's 'safe'. What fun is there in boring naked ponies with accesories all in a box/bag?

Its not the pony thats the problem its the fabric...if that makes sense :)

If a piece of fabric is completely colour fast then it will be fine against a pony for most of the time. However, the problem comes from the fact that a lot of the material used in MLP items is inexpensive and not colour fast - therefore colour easily leaches and stains what it touches.

A vinegar, cold water and salt soak can be used to make fabric colour fast - thats why you see people recommending it as a solution.

Therefore the same applies to any other fabric you use - if its colour fast it will be fine if its not colour fast then either treat it or always ensure to have a white uncoloured fabric between the material and the pony to ensure no staining :)

Thanks, everyone!

@Starly: I agree with your perspective!  It definitely depends on how you want to play with/collect your ponies.  I mused about the idea of keeping them in their packaging because it looks so nice, but I thought I'd have more fun making clothes for them and dressing them up- like Rarity would!  If there were any precautions I could take while doing so, though, I wanted to make sure I knew of them ahead of time.  That way, I can enjoy my ponies for as long as possible!   :)  I'm a novice at ponies so, unfortunately, I have to ask a lot of questions...  XD

@Pinkamena: Thanks for letting me know about the plastic accessories!

@hathorcat: Thank you!  I will definitely use this to soak pony clothing prior to them wearing it!  I'm not sure if I purchased color-fast fleece, but better safe than sorry!  I'll treat everything anyway!

I would wash the fabric first as well, just to be safe.
