Can Someone Explain MH Glue Seepage?
« on: August 09, 2012, 09:49:18 PM »
Title says it all. I kinda know what it is, but I think I need a real explanation. I really need to know what to look for, 'cause almost all my MH dolls are from Indonesia... EEP!
I took a break from the Arena from a couple months due to school and other things in my life. But I'm back now!

I've been lucky, none of my dolls have major glue seepage.

AFAIK glue seepage occurs when the glue used to hold the hair in place doesn't cure properly, causing the glue to seep through the hair plug holes and into the hair, causing the hair to feel greasy and sticky. I hear 'Goof Off' is good for getting rid of the initial greasiness but until all the glue seeps out then it's an ongoing problem. The glue that comes out isn't in large quantities though as the inside of the head will still appear dry.

I found out while removing Rochelle's hair that the glue itself is moldable like some sort of wax, yet sticky like really thickened honey.. It's definitely not a solid glue.  Quite gross, really, and it stuck to everything. My hands, tools I used to remove it, the table, ugh. I don't think we can say if it's going to happen to every doll from Indonesia, but it does seem to be a prominent issue.
However, there's a difference between the actual stickiness of glue and the oily residue from Saran hair manufacturing that can be more easily washed away.

Crikey yes I forgot about your Rochelle, Chi, I've actually seen another pic and the glue was totally dry and flakey, maybe Rochelles' hair had more glue or wasn't as far along in the seepage process than the other doll?

Yeah, it definitely seems to vary from doll to doll when it comes to the glue issues... No one can really predict what happens to what doll or if anything will. :(
As for "what to look for" it'll look like separated/wet strands of hair and feel sticky to the touch almost like honey.
There's no need to panic and think all your dolls are surely at risk, but it's good to check once in a while. ^_^

My rochelle definitely has it- I've denied it to myself, but in fairness, it is super greasy all the time, even after one wash. I'm gonna try washing it a few more then restyling it and go from there- I think only one of mine have it- the others don't present symptoms :) x

I think my new Mad Science Lagoona might have it. She's a bit thin on top anyway, so it's kinda hard to tell, but the hair at the top of her head is shinier than the hair lower down. I've washed it with shampoo/conditioner and also with dish soap. It's not sticky, though. Just shiny and a little bit clumpy - like the hairs are clumping together in bigger strands, which kinda exacerbates the thinness on the top. But it's definitely not sticky/greasy/oily. So maybe it's not glue seepage?

My first Home Ick Frankie definitely had it, though. Her hair was sticky/greasy, and at first I thought it was just oils from the hair spray and such, so I washed it and then possibly not even half an hour later, it was feeling greasy again. She also had a bum knee that wouldn't bend at all, so I complained to Mattel and they've sent me a new one.

When I de boxed my Rochelle, there was a big greasy smudge where her head was on the cardboard, so I feared the worst when taking her out properly, but she was fine, well, as fine as the MH helmet hair gets...It's such a weird issue.

I tested my Rochelle's head for my blog, and removing the glue was not a viable option for me. I've ordered some stuff from the US called Twin Pines Formula 911 that I've heard works as well as goof off 2, which has been discontinued. I'll test it as soon as I get it.

JigglesTheCat, the scalp should feel sticky or greasy, and the hair around the roots should feel thick and not flow well.

Thanks everyone! I'll check in a few. And for those of you who think their dolls may have it, I hope that's not the case. ^_^

I had it on my first wave Frankie.. It just felt and looked like she hadn't washed her hair in a few days. I ended up rerooting her, though. No amount of washing would take care of it.. and I didn't boil perm her or anything of the sort. Come to think of it she probably always had hair on the greasy side.. but none of my other dolls have the problem.
