sticky sigh - EDIT Pink marker problem??
« on: August 08, 2012, 11:45:23 AM »
New help need (rather than start an entire new thread)

I have a bait that has bright luminscent pink marker, not coming off with acetone. It is a white bait not scrubbing up as nicely as hoped so planning on spraying a better truer white. With the pink marks I have read things like Goo off can get rid (though unsure if can get in UK)

If I am spraying white on white various coats to then seal, am I ok spraying over the pink marker? Not experienced with this and wonder if it will be coverable or leak through?

Original post
I have a sticky problem with one of my ponies which is bewildering. Part of a set and the rest of them are all ok but this particular one remains sticky.

So what have I sealed it with you ask. Well I cant remember what I did originally but latest has been a matte varnish that has been absolutely fine with everything else. I havent used a spray varnish or modge podge...

I have modge podge but never tried it as sealer before and could use tips as to if it would be recommended to try next and if so how best to water it down?

For Mod podge, water it down to the consistency of milk, then just paint it on. I like to give mine two coats if I am using Mod Podge.

I can't advise for sure on how to remove it, but if you can't get Goo-Gone or similar, the active ingredients are petroleum solvent naphtha which is a mineral-based oil/solvent, and d-limonene, which is a common citrus-derived chemical found in a lot of citrus-based cleaning formulas.  So if you look for THAT stuff in a cleaner/sticker lifter, you'll be getting something similar.  Chase down the active ingredients if you can't find the actual thing.

Actual Goo-Gone is pretty safe, but there are several different kinds of petroleum naphtha, it's more of a category of stuff, and some if it is quite smelly and flammable.  So be very, very careful working with it and anything that contains it.

I personally have had good results using mineral spirits and mineral oil for sticker lifting, but I don't know how that would work on pink marks OR pony vinyl, so be advised and try on a tester or something!

Good luck, and stay safe!

As far as I know, highlight markers and similar can only be removed with either sunfading or acne cream, or a combination of these. Of course I can't remember the active ingredients of the acne creams right now, might be that these chemicals are included in some kind of cleaning products as well.

But I think if you're going to do an FBR anyway, the marks won't be a huge problem. It's highly unlikely that they'll leak, the only problem is that you'll probably need to add many, many coats to cover them. Gesso or some other primer is quite opaque so one or two coats under the paint would probably help reducing the number or layers needed. Good luck!
