It's getting harder to resist...
« on: August 02, 2012, 06:37:56 PM »
I love dolls. I don't collect them the same way I do MLP but I DO love them. Disney dolls have always been a weakness of mine. My most recent purchases were the classic and limited edition Merida dolls from the Disney store XD

But when I started checking out this thread, all I saw was MH this and MH that and at first I expressed little interest. But after seeing so many photos...I'm starting to get a taste for them DX Now every time I go to the toy isle, I can't help but glance at the MH section. They're getting harder and harder to resist. I feel like the next time I lay eyes on them, I'll end up caving.

Anybody else experience this before they started collecting?

Beautiful doll photos are what got me into dolls in the first place! If I'd never stumbled upon Pullip, Blythe, and BJD photos on dA way back in 2007, I don't know if I'd be collecting dolls now.

This is the very post that got me absolutely Liv addicted (well, technically it was this blog post, but Luvly got me there). Being an addict of that blog as well has caused me to fall in love with a few other toys, but its also saved me from some bad purchases. So its a good evil I guess. xD

If not for the review on Toybox Philosopher, I wouldn't be a Liv addict. I wouldn't have gone crazy to get a Liv horse. I wouldn't desperately want some Calico Critters. I wouldn't want a Bratzillaz Meygana. I wouldn't be such a huge toy addict, because I would have never found out that some kids toys are actually insanely awesome. I mean seriously, Livs are basically beginner BJDs for $10-20. That's incredible! I would've never given them a second glance if it wasn't for Luvly and that blog. I both thank and hate them, haha! Toys are cheaper than real BJDs and whatnot, but that also means I can acquire a crazy amount if I have disposable income. . .-coughs at 18 Livs and 1 Liv horse-

Honestly? I didn't like Livs when I saw them in the store. I've always disliked knees like theirs. If you would've told me I'd have twenty of them soon, I'd have laughed. But I couldn't be happier with my girls.

I didn't care for dolls before them, but I definitely experienced that before caving and getting my first Monster High doll. Would always kinda glance over them when they shared an aisle with the ponies, scooting closer and closer until I was buying Dead Tired Ghoulia.  Now I have ~30. XD

I joined this board years ago for the G3 MLP.  I eventually discovered The Dollhouse and did the exact same thing you did-  Slowly but surely got sucked into MH.  As time has passed, I have slowly gotten sucked in to other dolls as well.  Welcome!  :)

Ask Pinkamena! I bet she can give you some insight on her recent descent into doll madness.

I saw a Rochelle Goyle at Target the other day and I really wanted to grab her! She's just fabulous. Her and Nefera are likely on my list of MH dolls I'll end up with someday. MLP is a gateway drug and this forum is just a plethora of enablers. I have accepted this fact.

Yes indeed XD And there's just no going back once you've started down the rabbit hole  Whee!

ElusiveLily, I was solely a Disney doll collector too until last year, when someone I followed on Twitter mentioned Monster High, and I looked them up and... yeah, it really didn't take long until I completely fell for them. Resistance is futile!

Now I live in half-anticipation/half-fear of discovering another new doll line that I need...

I actually first saw MH at TRU while I was shopping for ponies.  Then I came on this forum to look them up.  The rest is history...!!!

ROFL! I'm starting to see that now. From looking at the MH dolls, I kind of saw why MLP collectors loved them so much. What makes MLP so much fun is all the pretty colors. You have different color bodies and hair, and MH is the same way. I think that's part of it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this. I was honestly first annoyed when I saw so many Monster High discussions going on. I was like "WUT. Is this ALL these people care about? Talk about something else!" But the photos...GOD DANGIT the photos!

I remember months back when I was at a Ross store with my mom. They get a lot of stuff from other stores and they sell it at a cheaper price. That's where I got my Twilight balloon :) Anyway, I saw a Draculaura doll sitting on a cart with a bunch of other stuff. And I honestly looked at that girl for probably a full two minutes. This was way before I was actually bitten by the MH bug...but even then, I couldn't help but show interest.

Now I don't know how much longer I'll be able to resist. I don't think my mom would approve XD It's not that she she doesn't support my pony collecting. But recently we were at an antique store where I bought a couple of ponies and the woman who runs the place was telling us about a sell that they were getting ready to have at another location, and she was asking me if I collected Barbies because someone had over 70 Barbies MIB. When I said no, my mom laughed and said "Ponies are enough" >_>; Oh boy.

This was me like a month ago! lol

It started by looking at the pictures. The dolls no the shelves were tempting but the boxes really didn't show off their beauty. Finally I caved and got a Frankie and Rochelle and it's been all uphill from there  :P

I now am the proud owner of Frankie, Rochelle, Lagoona, Clawdeen, Abbey, and Robecca!

It doesn't stop with Monster High. Once I got into dolls I got into ALL dolls. I'm a sucker for the Disney ones too. Tangled is a big hit in my collection

Well, maybe it can work out if you collect MH more slowly? Like a doll every 2 weeks or a doll a month or something along those lines. MLP is easy to get in bunches for some people due to thrifting and checking garage sales, so there's that. However, MH dolls cost about $20 MIB from the store (and online), so if you get 2 at once you're already at $40.

I do this with the Filly Princess BBs and the MLP Trading Cards. I am usually buying other things at the store and those little $2 packages add up fast, so I'll only grab between 1-3 each time I make a trip to Target. It's easier on the wallet at any given time and provides a good balance for me. I never feel like I absolutely have to grab a ton of them because I know I'll grab at least one on my next trip through.

It may also help to agree on a budget. :) I collect on a budget. It's a bit harder and you have to be smarter about your purchases, but it allows me to get what I want, when I want it. My very small budget has to span several different collections, so I'll change what I'm buying month by month or so.

I'm sure you'll be able to work something out so that both you and mom can be happy.

I've always loved dolls as well as ponies. I have some great memories of my childhood dolls. The new Disney dolls caught my eye and when I came over to the Dollhouse section I discovered Monster High. Resistance was futile and now I own four- Mad Science Lagoona, Skull Shores Abbey, Skull Shores Lala, and Spectra. I'm very happy with the ones I own and I'm not sure I want to get anymore. Except maybe Venus and if Mattel would release some more guys. Now I'm just keeping my eye out for a Gil I can afford for my Lagoona.

I wasn't planning on buying a whole bunch at once. I can't afford it. Although I spotted some at Target today that were only $12.99. I think it was the Skull Shores (is that what it's called?) And then I spotted another that came with extra accessories that was $20. I almost caved and bought the $13 one but I resisted.

The thought of getting into another collection scares me. I wouldn't even say I collect Disney dolls. It's just a matter of buying one if I find it very appealing. With pony collecting...it's kind of like a job. I have to stick with it, and I just can never get enough.

Well, I wouldn't ask her to buy them for me or anything. If I get them, it'll be with my money, and if she doesn't like it...well...she'll just have to deal XD But she's never been a "You need to stop it with all these toys" kind of parent.

But I just don't think I'm going to be able to resist it much longer. And I'm sure most people here would tell me not to resist anyway XD
