Making a suede dog collar colour fast?
« on: August 18, 2012, 03:36:50 PM »
Alright, weird question!

I bought my dog a new red collar (with a suede inner layer) some months ago but he hasn't worn it very much since because every time he does it makes the fur on his neck pink! I read that using white vinegar can make fabric pony clothes colourfast if they're leaching colour onto your ponies, and I did a quick google search that says vinegar can be used on suede but only for cleaning. Googling 'how to colour fast suede' gets me nothing more than 'see a professional', and I've already tried to find people having the same problem but I've found not a single person on the internet complaining of the same issue.

I'm hoping someone with experience, someone who has owned a suede dog collar and dealt with this problem before, could give me some tips. Thanks! :)

Could you just line the collar with fabric? I've never had a suede collar on my dogs because its not necessarily a great choice for the nature of a dog. They go out in the rain and thus the suede would get wet. Also it can expand and contract and thus be too tight or too loose and you may not notice it right away. I would also think it would cause a lot of hair rubbed off. The collar might just have to be a special occasion collar or a dry weather collar. You could try rubbing it with vinegar on a cloth but you can't soak it.

It already is the special occasions collar, as well as several others. My dog has a few collars to swap between because he damages them and I like him to have variety.
Funny thing about the suede collar is it's made his neck pink in dry weather so I guess it was his natural oils.
And he wears his collars loose around the house because he's always had fur rubbing problems, they're only the proper tightness when we go for a walk.

I might try vinegar on the collar anyway, just to see
Thanks for the advice :)
