I normally use straws, bobbies and those cheap soft curlers you can get at the drug store when I curl.I just make sure they are tight. And I leave them in for a week or so. They usually last quite awhile.I don't ever use any sort of product though to hold it.
My ponies never seem to hold their curl for long. I do have one pony who's curls have still held, though...I washed her hair with hot water, curled it around straws, and then stuck her in the freezer for an hour or so. Yep, the freezer Then I took her out and let her dry (and thaw) normally. Not sure if her hair was just more prone to holding curl, or if the freezer really did help, but she's the only one who got the freezer treatment, and the only one who still has nice curls.
*giggles* If I put ponies in the freezer to retain longer curl, I would have sooooooo many disturbed looks from people opening my freezer door. "Yes, the ponies have misbehaved and they are being punished. I ran out of carbonite."
