How do your ponies keep the curl?
« on: July 26, 2012, 11:36:07 PM »
I'm curling a few of my ponies hair, and I think I've at least gotten decent at getting the curls in. What do you do though that keeps their hair curls lasting longer? Mine last a while, but in a few weeks they are out again. I'd like longer lasting curls. ;--;

I normally use straws, bobbies and those cheap soft curlers you can get at the drug store when I curl.

I just make sure they are tight. And I leave them in for a week or so. They usually last quite awhile.

I don't ever use any sort of product though to hold it.

I used almost boiling water to set some tight curls on my G4...  Then I decided I was going to sell her, and someone might not like my styling (She had curls, and crimped hair). I could BARELY get those curls out. In fact, they still aren't out all the way after hot water, straight iron x 3...

I use pens with caps to straighten or curl my ponies hair. After I wash them I leave them in for 24 hrs. The curls usually last a long time, like a few months or so. I used hairspray for Rarity's massive curls though. They would never stay up!

I just wet the hair and set in curlers :)  For my G4s I find that that works pretty well, and I generally like softer curls anyway, so I take the curlers out after about a day.

oh I might should try this, thanks!

I probably should have mentioned all of my ponies are G1s, and I curl their hair with straws and leave it for 24 hours. I do pretty tight curls just having trouble with long term staying. >_<

I leave a teeny bit of conditioner in, seems to hold everyones curls fine for me apart from Molasses...I think I'd need superglue to get her curls to stay in!

I oddly have problems with some types of hair, such as G1 Goldilocks...the yellow hair holds curls excellently, but the orange section falls out like nothing.

Don't use hairspray on your ponies. It gets gummy and awful. I also advise leaving in the curlers for a longer amount of time, even though it's difficult to! (always want to see how they turned out)

I use this tutorial and I ll admit it ensures most ponies hold their curls...there are however a couple [Sugar Sweet and Raincurl] who simply refuse the rascals. I guess perhaps their hair has been heat straightened or treated in some way in their past to damage the plastic enough to prevent the curl from holding.

My ponies never seem to hold their curl for long. I do have one pony who's curls have still held, though...I washed her hair with hot water, curled it around straws, and then stuck her in the freezer for an hour or so. Yep, the freezer :P Then I took her out and let her dry (and thaw) normally.

Not sure if her hair was just more prone to holding curl, or if the freezer really did help, but she's the only one who got the freezer treatment, and the only one who still has nice curls.

I tried this freezer trick on the last few ponies I curled oddly - I read the tip on a thread here. Not enough time has passed to judge whether or not the curls will last longer - I did it to help set them I didnt realise there may be a further advantage of longevity in the curls! Thats cool...

*giggles*  If I put ponies in the freezer to retain longer curl, I would have sooooooo many disturbed looks from people opening my freezer door.

XD Carbonite...

I use the boil perm method on my customs, but have yet to use boiling water on any G1s. But I also haven't done any super tight curls on G1s... yet. I'm about to recurl a candy cane pony and, since she is staying in my collection for the foreseeable future, I plan to use boiling water on her. If I do ever sell her, I just have to be sure to mention she was re-curled.

Lol omg Star Wars :P

Hmmm there are so many options here, and I will have to try one out. I don't have many ponies that are curled maybe just six.
