Help with yarn brands?
« on: July 19, 2012, 06:17:57 PM »
I have another question regarding yarn. Does anyone know the best/most affordable kind to use to make perfume puff hair? I bought some from Walmart called Red Heart and I obviously got what I paid for. It didn't work at all x3x I'm just wanting to do a simple rehair and I'm already running into so many problems! Haha  :blush:

Thank you everyone so much for all of your help and wonderful patience! :heart:  :heart:  :heart:

EDIT: This is the third brand of yarn I've bought and tried to use, and of course it was a fail, yet again D; I'm getting tired of having to return stuff :[ Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I haired a couple of plugs to make sure the yarn works and it doesn't, because I don't wanna use too much then not be able to take it back :[
Here's a picture of what it looks like:

The yarn is really soft and I've been using a comb :[ All it's doing is brushing out the fibers and not getting any poof D;

Sanadaookami did a really nice perfume puff tutorial on the old area.  *huge fan* And it is not easy I know.  Let me look for the link...

Now for me the old site still redirects really badly so you might just want to message her and ask her your questions if you can't get it to load properly.

About the exacto I got mine from Ace Hardware and it was just the cross adjustable.  But I don't use it much, I prefer a doll needle.

What kind of exacto blade handles do you use? I found one that has one slit, however I think it seems more common to have the one that has two? If so where do you find them? Also, how do you cut your needles? I have had a horrible time trying to do it >_< I'm trying to make my own rehairing too :lookround:
Mine just has one slit it's a gripper or something like that. It's got a pink handle. I got it from the scrapbooking section of walmart.

I'm also going to stalk this for making rehairing tool tips :D

I make and sell rehairing tools, and what works best for me are the Xacto knifes you can get from Hobby Lobby. They have the X slit to grasp a needle with and they are the cheapest.

For needles.. You CAN use wire cutters but the needles dull the wire cutters fast, simply smash, or are brittle and break in my opinion. I invested in a Dremmel rotory tool and I sand the needle eye off at an angle. This keeps the needle from shattering or just mashing, and I don't hurt my hand on pliers every time. I grasp the needle in pliers and brace it against the edge of the table. The sparks are scary at first, but they are harmless.

Please use caution when using power tools of ANY kind folks!

Oh, to add to that, the needle size I personally use and mainly sell is a size 5 Embroidery needle, I think. But Tapestry needles work also. A size 22 or so Tapestry needle can work if you like bigger needles, which I do not. I will be adding them to my store soon though.

Maniah: Yeah my needles kept snapping in half rather than actually cutting the way I wanted them to :( How much will your rehairing tools be?  ^.^

Would I be able to purchase it? :D Do you know how much shipping normally costs for them?
Oh no! I didn't think it was possible for them to actually shatter :o
