Cleaning Doll Clothes - B/A pics added
« on: July 19, 2012, 01:35:34 PM »
Hi all!  I just have a quick question about cleaning up some vintage clothes.  I've washed tons of Barbie clothes and other random doll clothes, but they're generally just made of cotton, so they're easy to clean up.  I typically put outfits inside a sock, tie the end up, and run them through with a load of clothes on the gentle cycle.

However, now I have some Jem clothes that need cleaning up and I don't know if that will do any damage to the shiny lame' parts of the clothes.  Should I just use oxy-clean to wash them?

Anybody have any vintage clothes/dolls that they've cleaned up?  To keep the thread interesting, I'd love to see!

I would be careful witht he lame. I had a TON of Jem stuff as a child, and rubbed the shiny off just during normal play wear. So, I would probably lean toward hand-washing in oxy solution. possibly a diluted dawn mix.

Good luck!

what about antique doll? XD
I have an old 50's composition doll that my grandmother gave me.
It is in desperate need of a restore and I just dont have the talent for that.
so I dont have any b/a pictures, but I do have photos of the doll if you'd want to see them.

I went the oxy clean route, and they're drying right now.  My goodness, were they disgusting...like, worse than I thought, lol.  That's what happens with eBay purchases, hahaha.  But, they cleaned up quite nicely, I must say, the tights and belts look brand new.  When they dry, I'll have to post a picture!

Knibitz - I'd love to see pics of the doll!

ETA:
Here are the girls right after I opened them up.  My apartment is a cave, so you really can't see how dirty some of the clothes are, and just dingy in general, especially that Glitter n' Gold outfit...bleh

And here they are after, with the addition of Roxy, who was happy to have some Misfit clothes to wear...even her own shirt!

Everybody has been Magic Erased to high heaven and everyone but Shana had their hair washed and conditioned.  I didn't touch hers because it's still absolutely perfect and I love her curls.  Gold Jem's hair was horrible, as you can see in the first pic.  The rubber band had actually dry-rotted and was crumbled into her hair.  so she has a fresh, new ponytail and a clean lacy ribbon.  :D
