Buddhism
« on: July 06, 2012, 02:46:28 AM »
I've been reading about it for an essay I need to write and I find it very, very interesting !

Any Buddhists here? How did you start?

I'm really interested in hearing people's stories about it :D

I am!

I'm a born Buddhist. That's how it started :)

My college teacher said that the Buddhism most South East Asian Chinese practice nowadays is actually intertwined with Confucianism tho (given how we pray for our ancestors with joss sticks and joss papers), and that real Buddhists are vegetarians. I don't really know anymore. My ID card says I'm a Buddhist, as do my parents' and grandparents' ID card says they are.

There are many variations of Buddhism, so I would not say there are "real" buddhists. But that's cool ! :D

I was always interested in the world's religions and schools of thought because of my grandfather, who had a whole library of books about everything from Kabbalah to Wicca.  I always identified with Buddhist principles, and then I read the book The Jew in the Lotus which details the convergence of thought between Judaism and Buddhism.  It was quite an eye opening read.

(edit because I messed up book title)

Nice ! :D I identify with some of their principles too. It's pretty much the only religion I can say this about lol.

Wow, you went to all those places already? Cool !! :D My parents are Christian Catholics and I was tought to be one as well, but I never believed it in xD I gave up on religion when I was about 10 or so and don't really believe in anything even today. But I do indentify with the teachings of Buddhism, though ! :D

Maybe~ :D But it is interesting to note that all religions say the same things and have the same basis of doing good to others. What changes - and often ends up in war - is people's interpretations. Interesting, isn't it?
