G4 ponies melting with baking clay?
« on: July 27, 2012, 06:19:11 PM »
 Hi!

I was wondering if anyone could help me! Usually my ponies have been okay when I've used polymer clay before, but recently I notice if the clay is heavy on one side of the head at all she'll get uneven. The head will droop and tilt a bit, and the seam between the body and head will become uneven. One pony even had her head plug melt into a weird angle! Does anyone know why this is? Is there a way to prevent this or help against it? Should I bake them at a lower temp than the clay says, for short intervals, or something else?

 Any help would be great.

Hi Hannah!

G4 ponies seem to have softer plastic that is prone to more probs in the oven.  Some people have had success with lowering the temperature or even putting the sculpted pony in boiling water to cure the clay. (I haven't tried the latter).

If all else fails, you could always try epoxy to air dry?

The only issue with boiling is you do not really get a full cure, you can use a heat gun carefully to cure clay.  Best to try lowering the temp and extending the cooking time.  Also you can use some foil to prop the pony so it does not move.  Another idea is to use thinner layers and bake a few times.

You might want to see if baking the pony in water works for you.
